John J. McGuinness

John J. McGuinness (born 1955 in Kilkenny) is an Irish Fianna Fáil Party politician and TD for Carlow-Kilkenny. He was first elected in the 1997 general election, was re-elected at the 2002 general election and is a full-time public representative.

He first entered local politics in 1979 when he won a seat on Kilkenny Borough Council and was a subsequent Mayor of the city. He was the third generation of his family to serve on this council. From 1991 until the abolition of the dual mandate in 2003, he was also member of Kilkenny County Council, where father Michael (Mick) McGuinness was the longest-serving councillor (from 1959–1999) as well as a member of the South Eastern Health Board for 25 years.[1]

He is a member of the Public Accounts Committee and is regarded as being on the left wing of the party.
