John J. Flanagan

Senator John J. Flanagan, born in Selden, New York, is a Republican State Senator from the Second Senate District in Suffolk County, New York, which includes the entire Town of Smithtown and portions of both the Town of Brookhaven and the Town of Huntington on the North Shore of Long Island.

Senator Flanagan was first elected to State Senate in 2002 and reelected on November 2, 2004, following the path of his father, John Flanagan, who served in the New York State Assembly from 1972 to 1986. Flanagan has authored laws to lower the legal blood alcohol limits for boaters from .10 to .08 and has increased penalties for public lewdness. He also authored a landmark measure which protects crime victims from their assailants who are released as a result of mental illness.

Flanagan is a 1979 graduate of Harborfields High School. He received his bachelor's in economics from College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1983 and his Juris Doctor degree from Touro College in Huntington, New York in 1990. He keeps a private practice in Huntington.

Flanagan has a wife, Lisa, and three children.
