Superintendent John Heaton is a fictional character in the long-running and popular ITV drama The Bill. Heaton is the most senior officer at Sun Hill. His callsign is 'Sierra Oscar 52'. Heaton arrived in June 2006 as a replacement to Superintendent Adam Okaro, who was promoted to Chief Superintendent.
[edit] Personal life and background
Prior to becoming Sun Hill's Superintendent, Heaton was a DCI at the Specialist Crime Directorate. Heaton appears to favour 'zero tolerance' polices. Whereas his predecessors (in particular Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow) were very passive and spent most of their shift in their office, Heaton favours being more involved. He is the first Sun Hill boss to interview suspects in person, arguing that although this is considered unconventional, it is perfectly within his powers. All operations must go through him and he does not like to be ignorant of the movements of his subordinates. Although initially appearing power-crazed, he has been shown to have a softer side. Although little of his domestic life has been seen, he apparently has a wife and a daughter with Down's Syndrome upon whom he appears to dote.
[edit] Family life and relationships
Although extremely driven, ambitious and hard working, Heaton has a rather strenuous private life. He has a difficult relationship with his estranged wife, has a young daughter called Charlie with Down's Syndrome and is also having an affair with Deputy Assistant Commissioner Georgia Hobbs. In the episode on the 1st of Feburary, Heaton's wife told him to move out (due to her being afraid to tell him that she was duped by a conman and burgled) and it seems that Charlie will be in Heaton's wife's custody. His realtionship with DAC Hobbs came to an abrupt end on Thursday 1 March 2007 when he had her arrested for corruption. The DAC had been helping a dodgy property developer aquire land around London including the current site of Sun Hill station which she intended to close to get him the land. As she was led away by officers from the DPS, Heaton told her that what she had done was no different to what DC Nadir had done.
Heaton is played by Daniel Flynn.
