[edit] Star Trek: Generations
At the beginning of Star Trek: Generation,[1] the Enterprise's maiden voyage is interrupted by a distress call from two El-Aurian refugee transports caught in the Nexus energy ribbon. Despite being sorely under-equipped and undermanned, Harriman orders the Enterprise to intercept the transports. The Enterprise arrives too late to save one of the transports, but on Kirk's advice, Harriman moves in close enough to use the transporters to rescue forty-seven El-Aurian refugees from the second ship. However, the Enterprise itself becomes caught in the ribbon. When Scotty determines that a specially-configured burst from the main deflector can disrupt the ribbon long enough for the ship to escape, Harriman volunteers to go below decks to make the modifications. However, Kirk reminds Harriman that his "place is on the bridge of [his] ship"; Kirk makes the modifications. Although Kirk is successful and the Enterprise escapes, an energy tendril damages a portion of the stardrive section, exposing the area where Kirk is to open space. Kirk is lost in the incident and presumed dead.
[edit] In print
According to the non-canon Lost Era novel Serpents Among the Ruins,[2] Harriman remains in command of the Enterprise for nearly twenty years and develops a reputation as an excellent and capable officer. Harriman stands down as captain of the Enterprise after the Tomed Incident of 2311 and is succeeded by Demora Sulu.
[edit] Other media
The non-canon game Star Trek: Starship Creator by Simon and Schuster Interactive includes Harriman as a character who can be assigned to one of the various positions on players' ships. In a nod to Alan Ruck's role as Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the game lists Harriman as a native of Chicago, Illinois, with a wife named Sophie, a son named Ferris, and an interest in 20th century sports cars.
