Palace's fitness levels saw a dramatic improvement, but even this could not help the Eagles avoid being relegated from the Premiership.
Palace then reached the Play-offs, back in the Championship, but were beaten by Watford, which resulted in Iain Dowie leaving, to go to Charlton Athletic. However, new manager Peter Taylor replaced him with England U-21 fitness coach Mark Hulse, leading him to follow Dowie to Charlton.

On 19 February 2007 Dowie was appointed as the new manager of Coventry City FC and on the same day Harbin was appointed as the club's Performance Manager, the same job he had previously occupied at Charlton Athletic FC and Crystal Palace FC.
