From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sir John Guise, GCMG, KBE (1914-1991) was the first Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, which gained independence from Australia in 1975. Dr. Guise was a native Papua New Guinean and was a vocal supporter for independence. A veteran politician, Guise was acting Speaker of the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea from 1973 to 1975. He served as viceroy from 1975 to 1977. He resigned as Governor-General after only two years, and said at the time he wanted to return to active politics.
He remained politically active and considered as a potential leader during the civil unrest after his term in office. Guise died in 1991 and a sports stadium was named in his honour.
