John "Johnny" Gordon Bernander was born on September 22, 1957 in New York City. He grew up in Brooklyn and Kristiansand, Norway. During the years 1989-1993 he was a representative for Høyre, the Conservative Party of Norway, in Stortinget. In 1991, he became vice-chairman of the party.

On July 15, 2001, he became the broadcasting director (kringkastingssjef) of NRK, the Norwegian state-owned broadcasting company. Einar Førde was the previous director. He is also known to be a freemason.
