John Donovan began riding at motorcycles at the age of 5. He began racing with the New England Trail Riders Association at the age of 7. After a quick start he ultimately earned junior championships for both the Enduroseries and Hare Scramblesseries. Later, winning a total of 4 races and earning 2 second place finishes he became the quickest ever rider to achieve class promotion going from novice(C-class) to expert(A-Class) in only 6 Enduros. At the age of 19, Donovan raced his 1st full season in the adult ranks and earned a few class wins but was sidelined during most of the year with injuries due to his aggressive style of riding. Donovan never really recovered fully from those injuries and retired early at the age of 21 from racing.

Later Donovan showed up at a few New England Trail Riders Association events.
