[edit] High school and college careers
Denney graduated from Horizon High School in Thornton, Colorado with National Student-Athlete Honors.
After playing for Ricks Junior College in Rexburg, Idaho in 2000, Denney transferred to Brigham Young University where he majored in business management. He was redshirted in 2001. From 2002 to 2004, he was a three-year letterman, starting 29 games at defensive end and appeared in a total of 32. As a junior, Denney earned All-Mountain West Conference honors for 42 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Following a senior campaign in which he had 27 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble, Denney was selected to play in the Hula Bowl. In his three years with BYU, Denney also handled long-snapping duties. It would be this aspect of his game, rather than his play on defensive, that would get him to the next level.
[edit] Pro career
[edit] 2005
Denney was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2005 by former head coach Nick Saban. In training camp, he beat out longtime Dolphins long snapper Ed Perry. Denney appeared in all 16 games in 2005 - the only undrafted rookie to appear in every game for the Dolphins that season. On punt coverage he also compiled five tackles, including a career high two in a December 12 win over the San Diego Chargers.
[edit] 2006
In February 2006, Denney underwent surgery for an injured elbow. He was the team's long snapper once again for the Dolphins and accumulated five tackles during the 2006 season.
[edit] 2007
He was tendered an offer as an exclusive rights free agent in the 2007 offseason, and was re-signed to a one-year deal on March 22, 2007.
