John Noel Dempsey (1915-1989), born in Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland. John Dempsey was the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1959 1961 and Governor of Connecticut from 1961 to 1971. He was an Irish Catholic Democrat and an ally of party chairman John M. Bailey. Prior to statewide office John was Mayor of Putnam, Connecticut. While living in Putnam Dempsey was the Soccer Coach at the Pomfret School in Pomfret.

The University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut is known as John Dempsey Hospital.
