John Cameron, Lord Abernethy

John Alastair Cameron, Lord Abernethy, 61, has been a Senator of the College of Justice of Scotland since 1992. He was a member of the English Bar before moving to the Scottish Faculty of Advocates, where he served as Vice-Dean from 1983-1992. He is one of Scotland's most senior judges.

Graduate of Oxford University (MA, Pembroke College) and is an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College.
Called to the Bar in 1963 and admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1966.
Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1979.
Advocate Depute from 1972-1975.
Served as Standing Junior Counsel to the Department of Energy from 1976-1979.
Served as Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Development Department from 1978-1979.
Legal Chairman of Pensions Appeal Tribunals for Scotland from 1979-1992 and President of the Tribunal from 1985-1992.
Member of the International Bar Association and was Chair of the association's Judges Forum from 1994-1998. Since 1998 has been a council member of the association's Section on Legal Practice and its Human Rights Institute.
President of the Scottish Medico-Legal Society since 1996 and is the author of Medical Negligence: An Introduction.
