[edit] School

John Cabot Catholic Secondary School is a secondary school of approximately 965 students, of diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds, from Grade 9 to Grade 12. Our school population generally reflects the socio-economic mix found within Mississauga. Most of the surrounding community consists of single-family dwelling homes and multi-level apartment buildings situated in a geographic area that is located in close proximity to the core of the city of Mississauga.

John Cabot Catholic S.S. is a caring school and community environment that stresses understanding and acceptance of others, commitment to our Catholic faith and high academic standards. We provide a safe and comfortable learning environment where models of Gospel values and Catholic doctrines, teachings and beliefs are an integral part of the daily life of our school. The school motto, "Faith, Hope & Charity" was chosen through the process of community consultation and reflects a holistic philosophy where religion and daily life are intertwined. As such, all activities of administration, management, counselling, academic and pastoral work, prayer and worship, extracurricular and intra-curricular involvement, help to prepare John Cabot Catholic S.S. students for their lives as Catholics in the community.

Our students come to us with a variety of strengths and needs, with our Catholic faith as our common bond. Our prayer life, liturgical celebrations, the sacraments, and our faith and values system form the foundation of our school program.

At John Cabot Catholic S.S., we are proud of our balanced religion, academic, arts, technology and athletics program. It offers students a well-rounded and value-centered education to help them make good choices for the future and allows us to reflect and serve the entire community as we prepare our students for post-secondary education and careers. The curriculum planned and provided in the school is broad, balanced and relevant to the needs and aspirations of all students. A wide range of subjects and learning experiences is offered in order to develop the skills, abilities and talents of individual students. Accordingly, appropriate assessment procedures are employed regularly to motivate and encourage student success. To ensure coherence and wholeness, subjects are taught against the background of the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum, the Gospel values of Jesus Christ and sound educational practices.

[edit] History

John Cabot Catholic S.S. was established in 1997 to support Catholic parents in their responsibility for the spiritual, religious, moral, academic and physical needs of their children in accordance with the teachings of the Church. The school community at John Cabot Catholic S.S. is committed to the search for excellence, the uniqueness of the individual and the education of the whole person while experiencing a life in a community founded on Gospel values.

This year (2007), it will be celebrating it's tenth year anniversary.

[edit] Students Demographic

The student demographic breakdown in John Cabot is most students attending the school has a Hispanic background.

The school has many issues with fake 'gangsters' on their civis day i.e: Grade Nines boys who wear long red shirts pretending that they're repersenting the Bloods, a L.A based gang. While some students choose to wear blue shirts to repersent the Crips gang, a rival of the Bloods.

The school is run by the Student Council within their walls. Majority of the Student Council sets up the school events and need donations for their events from students. Lately, secret future school events planned by the Student Council has been leaked out by one of their members/volunteers. They consider this information 'Top Secret' and 'Confidential' until they are officially announced to the school. Trying to keep it from the mainstream media of the student body, they are currently on the hunt for the person responsible for their leak. By using word of mouth between their members, they plan to catch this person who 'leak' their information (about future civis day, dance dates, photocopy copies of their last dance tickets, etc.) and kick them out of the Student Council as soon as possible. This is a major 'inside' issue happening within John Cabot Catholic Secondary right now.

John Cabot has had many on going problems, complaints from the community about underage smoking in front of a bus stop outside the school.

Another problem facing John Cabot's students are the outbreak of prejudice against people from Asia, eastern Asia, western Asia, northern Europe. Another group that's being discriminated against is the LGBT people.

Unlike most high schools, John Cabot does not have a LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender) support group, choosing to stay silent about it.

The main reason for discrimination and prejudice from some of the students attending John Cabot Catholic Secondary is their conservative followings and majority of the school demographic being Caucasian (Ukrainian and Polish) blacks and Hispanic. The school student body consider these two race, espicially people who are Hispanic; are in control because of their mass population in the school.

[edit] School Teams/ Clubs/ Events

There are many school clubs by announced and held during from time to time over the school year's first and second semester. Currently the most popular clubs by members are:

-The School Newspaper (publish their first 2006-2007 issue 'Cabot Inquirer' but faces many criticism for racially discrimination within it's club i.e It's first issue was notable for only using articles submitted by it's Caucasian students)

-The Breakfast Club (meets everyday before school starts 7:40-8:00 in the P.I.P room and is a non-profitable orginazation to feed students healthy free breakfast)

-School Teams (Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee)

-The School Main Production (Wicked, retold, act, and sing by Cabot students.)

-The Prom Comity (Setting up, making plans and working towards John Cabot's 2007's Prom)

-The Yearbook Club (A lot of people 'suck-up' to these privileges student who is in this club because they set up the year book and choose who they want to see in the year book extra photos and who are "The Most..." i.e: Most Adorable, Most Annoying, Most Stupid, Most Beautiful)

Another popular event that happens through the months are "Teachers V.S Students" ... Basketball, Dodgeball, Football, this is a huge event that many loves to watch and to play with. The set up of the event is to target John Cabot students to stay off the streets and have something to do after school.

The school team is named "Colts", sporting a Stallion mascot.

[edit] School Staff

A lot of the teachers are more helpful and are easy to understand by talking to them one on one.

The school's main office is never helpful and even the Staff would suggest you to go to the Guidance Councilors room instead, for better support and help.

Also John Cabot S.S has a large Chapel beside the Guidance, run by their Chaplin, Mrs. D'Vidio.
