John Briggs is a California state politician best known for sponsoring Proposition 6 in 1978, a bill that became known as the Briggs Initiative.
A former insurance broker, Briggs was a strict supporter of the death penalty and a strict opponent of gay and lesbian rights. Critics accused Briggs of using his initiative to attract attention to support his failed campaign for governor of California in the 1978 Republican primary.
