John Bourne was born in Staffordshire. He spent much of his childhood in Northern Ireland. He studied science, and got a BSc in Physics at the University College of North Wales, followed by an MPhil (Research on Solid State Theory) at the Imperial College of Science and Technology and H.C.Oersted Institute, Copenhagen. He was then a computer programmer, maths teacher and physics lecturer, until 1986, when "I did a Gauguin but not in the South Seas. I walked out. It was tremendous." He has been a full-time artist since then. He lives in Wales and classifies himself as a Welsh artist.
In 2001 he founded the Wrexham group of the Stuckists art movement, the first group in Wales, and also set up the Welsh Stuckism International Centre. He has been exhibited at the London Stuckism International Centre, and also in the landmark 2004 Liverpool Biennial show The Stuckists Punk Victorian at the Walker Art Gallery. He was one of the artists in the Triumph of Stuckism, a Stuckist painting exhibition which comprises part of Liverpool Biennial's 2006 programme at Liverpool John Moores University. He is webmaster of the Wrexham Stuckists and the Welsh Paintings site.
He paints in a simple, naive style with subjects based on memories and has said:
“ | I start with memories. You only remember what’s relevant. I make loads of sketches from imagination. I pin the sketches on the wall. I often look at a sketch for months or even years before I see a way to make it into a painting. It usually goes well at first but then I run into problems of composition. I have to make many changes. Sometimes it’s years later that I find a way to finish it. I’m trying to reveal something of a world beyond time and space. | ” |
He has curated art shows at the Oswestry Heritage Centre and also taken part in Stuckist demonstrations against the Turner Prize at Tate Britain.
