[edit] Hornsby vs. Kent

Jeff Kent has played other positions over the years. Is it for sure, that he has hit 300 as a second baseman? Wahkeenah 15:34, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Good point. In fact, according to the Baseball Almanac, soon-to-be-inducted Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is the all-time leader for second basemen, at 277; he also hit 5 at shortstop. In fact, when I read that, I recalled vaguely that the subject came up late in his career, i.e. that he had passed Hornsby or whoever for the second base record. I'm assuming that record is through last year. Check it out: [1] Having said all this, my own opinion is that home runs "by position" is an ersatz record. I could not find anything in The Sporting News record book about it. And do you throw all outfielders together, or do you break it down by position? It's artificial, to my way of thinking. It's a guideline to productivity at a position, but it's not a "record" in the normal sense. In any case, that bogus "fact" about him being the only second baseman with 300 homers should either be removed from the Hornsby page altogether, or else qualified in some way. I found one website that asserted Kent had passed Sandberg's 277 late last season. I also found a website, contradicting these, that said Hornsby had hit 286 as a second baseman. Maybe this needs further research... however, I found no websites initially that claimed Hornsby hit at least 300 as a second baseman, so I think you could remove that reference, with an explanatory comment. What's the link for that website? In any case, I'll take away that stat from the Hornsby page, unless you beat me to it. FYI, the way Bret Boone is [not] hitting for the Twins, he's going to be hard pressed to add to his totals. Wahkeenah 17:21, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
