[edit] Neutral?
This article doesn't sound neutral at all.
Sounds like a fan wrote it.
I agree... but if you're so incensed, why don't you do something about it? Jaems 03:58, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry, did I sound incensed? Just stating an opinion civilly. That you've agreed to.
[edit] Deletion
The subject of this page is neither notable or prominet. The achievements listed are esentially local and parochial. THere is no evidence that the songs that have been authored by this person are of any particular worth or longeivity. Albatross2147 22:50, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Please don't delete!
I think it would be a mistake to delete this article, but I do agree that the list of songs written by Joel Houston could probably be removed. It's not really relevent or important. What is important is putting together a comprehensive biography. The problem is that there really isn't a lot of information on the internet about Joel Houston, hence it's difficult to add external links and/or citations to this article. But that's bound to change. Houston's songs (and just everything that has anything to do with Hillsong) are only going to get bigger and more popular, which is why I think this article should be expanded, rather than deleted. It's much easier to delete than it is to expand... someone needs to stand up and do the hard work and expand!!! uhhhh... but who's going to do it?! I guess I could try. I might do a bit of research into Joel Houston's life over the next few days, and see what I can do.Teebs101 00:38, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes but is notable or prominent in the wider community? So far as I can see he basically plays music writes songs that may or may not have artistic merit and works in his parent's business. If your edits can show him worthy of inclusion in Wp I would be happy for the deletion to fail. Albatross2147 01:47, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- He is very noteworthy in the Christian community. Deleting him would be equivalent to deleting Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. As the leader of Hillsong United, he has contributed to many albums and has also been on tour, and United songs are sung in many churches worldwide. He goes beyond just a church in Australia. If you are for deleting this article, does that mean that other such articles like Tim Hughes and Matt Redman should be deleted too? Their songs are sung in churches worldwide, but they're not prominent outside of the Christian circle. By the way, Hillsong Church is one of the most prominent Protestant churches in the world, so it's not just his "parents' business". Oh, and I'm sorry if you feel offended by this, which I don't mean to do. It's just that if you did more research ON wikipedia, you would see that this isn't a pointless article. - I am not offended. I just want you to cite evidence of his notability. As I said all he has done is worked in Hillsong and written a few songs which are effectively unknown outside the relatively small Hillsong community and other fringe cults. Your point about the prominence of Hillsong iis irrelevant since I am not suggesting that that article be deleted. As for the Hughes and Redman articles I don't know because I haven't seen them yet. But I'd have to say that the inclusion of every person who stands up in front of a congregation somewhere and thumps a book full of myths is going to render Wikipedia nugatory. Or to put it another way are we going to have to have an article on every priest, pastor and ayotollah? it seems to me that is what you are arguing. If you were to put Wentz up for deletion, I would probably vote for it. Albatross2147 12:18, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- No, I'm not advocating for every single person out there. But I'm saying that he's known worldwide for his contributions. WORLDWIDE. By the way, Hillsong is not a fringe cult. It is a leading Christian church. As for Houston, he's basically a rising star in Christian music, although I don't like putting it in those terms. Have you not read what I added to the article? He's probably more known than Jann Arden, a singer known mostly only in Canada, but she still demands an article. I just don't understand your argument, that a person has to be notable worldwide to everyone. If that's the case, then basically every article in K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop should be deleted because those artists are only known by those who follow Korean/Japanese/Chinese pop. They're certainly not known much outside of their people groups. Utada Hikaru is a huge star in her native Japan, but her English debut album bombed heavily. Fin.K.L was one of the biggest girl groups, but only in South Korea. I would certainly advocate for the deletion of this article if it was some small local church band playing at some local church, but this is the leader of one of the leading worship bands in the world. Heck, the last Hillsong album even managed to top the secular charts in Australia. And he contributed to that. To me, this argument seems very narrow-minded. SKS2K6 17:34, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

- Well if you are so passionate about this character clean up the entry and make it a bit more encyclop. I am sure you catch my drift on that. Albatross2147 02:07, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

- What Joel has done is hardly noteworthy even when compared to people in Australia. His fame has been propelled by who is parents are. And most of the time they're in the 'secular' media is when the news reports of Hillsong rorting hundreds of thousands of taxpayers dollars. The article sounds like it's been written by someone in the church: a very narrow minded view. The wikipedia entry about Pat Mesiti was far more interesting but it's long since been deleted. - This article may be written in an unprof. or biased tone, but it is worthy and he is a key Hillsong figure, even if he's not that well known out of Christian circles. Wattylfc 15:12, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

- Don't delete. While barely anything can be found about him on the internet, he does appear on tv nearly every Sunday. Who knows how many people might know of him, you don't have to be christian to enjoy hillsong music. I haven't been to church for several years but I like watching/listing to hillsong. How about merging his information with one of his parents' bios or with Hillsong Music in the worship leaders section? Or if someone can provide a citation from a couple of respected sources, not on the internet, that might be enough to ensure his own article. Just my two cents worth. - Added Beliefnet citation. It didn't show up in my other searches, but I remembered reading the item last year. Beliefnet's search engine is lousy and it didn't show there either. But with some creativity I located it. Beliefnet is arguably the largest spiritual website in the world. Roaming27 01:11, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

- The main reason that's been put forth for deleting this article is: Joel Houston is not well known outside of the christian community. Uh, ok. Look, if this were an article about some secular Aussie indie artist whose albums had sold 10,000 copies, chances are no one would want to delete this article, even if this fictional independant artist were virtually unknown beyond circles of enthusiastic alt-rock fans. Now the reality is this is an article about a guy who has contributed to albums that have sold millions of units worldwide. Albums like "For all You've Done", which, as you may remember, debuted at #1 on the aria charts. It makes no sense to delete this article.Teebs101 22:29, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
