Joe Cooney

Joe Cooney is a former Irish sportsperson who played hurling with Galway in the 1980s.

Joe Cooney, who hails from the Sarsfields club in County Galway, was an outstanding score-getter during his inter-county career. He won an All-Ireland Minor title with his native county in 1983, before winning an All-Ireland Under-21 medal thre years later in 1986. He quickly made the step-up onto the senior side and was a key figure when Galway won back-to-back All-Ireland Senior titles in 1987 and 1988. Cooney also won National Hurling League and Railway Cup honours as well as All Star Awards in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1989.
