JOE is a terminal-based text editor for Unix systems, available under the GPL. It is designed to be easy to use, including an integrated help system and a reminder of how to get help always on the screen. JOE has most, if not all, of the Unix-integration features of vi, such as being able to filter a block of text through an external program. The key sequences are similar to WordStar and Turbo C. It is customizable, and comes with macro files that help it emulate Emacs (though it lacks the lisp programmability of Emacs), Pico, or WordStar. Versions 3.0 and higher also include color syntax highlighting.

JOE was the default editor in some early Linux distributions, which has led to it being popular in certain circles. It is included as an option in most current Linux distributions.
