João Gabriel Nazareth Amorim, is an Animation Director at Curious Pictures,NYC. João is a Graduate of Art Center College of Design, where he originally started his Career as an Automotive Designer, in the mid 90’s. Through designing Cars and products at Matra Auto/Renault and later Henry Dreyfuss Ass., he became familiar with 3D.
In 1997, while working at Alias in San Francisco, he made the switch from Design to Animation, and since then he has worked at a various studios throughout Europe, USA and Brazil.
In 2000, João Amorim Directed the Award winning Short film Don’t get charged up!
(Chicago Children’s Film Festival, AnimaMundi, Animadrid, Telluride Indie Fest, Guggenheim Cine Kidz, Cordoba Animation Festival, among others). João worked as an Animation Director at Estudios Mega/Tibet Filmes from 1999 to 2002. It was then that he directed the Short Doctor’s Appointment.
In 2002 João worked for Liquid TV in London, and in 2003 he moved back to the US. In the US he worked as a freelance Animator, CG Supervisor and Animation Director at various studios in NYC (BNS, Wimze, Duart, Hunter Gatherer, etc.). In 2004 he acted as an animation Director, on Bob Young’s Sundance 2004 official selection: “Human Error” aka “Below the Belt”.
Since 2003, João has worked at Curious Pictures. First as an Animator, then as a Supervisor and now in 2006 as a Director. He has also acted as an overseas supervisor in India, supervising over 100 artists. João has specialized in Character Performance, through key framing but also through Motion Capture. Recently he helped develop a sophisticated Facial retargeting system, which allows for extremely accurate translation of Human Facial motion onto any 3d Character. João recently finished work on “Chicago 10”, Brett Morgen’s new documentary that opened Sundance 2007, as the Head of Animation. He has also been directing a series of Animations for the BMWusa website.
João is also a teacher for the MFA in Animation at Parsons and at NYU. He is currently in pre production on a short film called H2O about our water resources and Climate change, as well as on a feature about 2012, synchronicity and the collapse of our society.
