Joan Elizabeth Miller Higginbotham is an American astronaut. Her first mission was STS-116 on Space Shuttle Discovery as mission specialist 4.
Higginbotham was born in Chicago, Illinois. She attended high school at Whitney Young Magnet High School, graduating in 1982. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1987. She also has a Masters of Management Science (1992) and Masters in Space Systems (1996) both from the Florida Institute of Technology.
She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and The Links, Incorporated.
She started her career at the Kennedy Space Center in 1987 and has worked mainly as a payload specialist in the Space Shuttle program. She was accepted into the astronaut program in 1996 and was part of the crew of STS-116, which launched on December 9, 2006 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Higginbotham took with her onboard the Discovery a scarf for Houston professional soccer team the Houston Dynamo.
She also took a banner displaying the 22 founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.[citation needed]
