Joan Brady is the first woman, and so far the only American, to win Britain's prestigious Whitbread Book of the Year Award.

Her second novel, Theory of War, won the award in 1993. This book also won the French Prix de Meilleur Livre Etranger. Bleedout is her first and only thriller so far.

She hails from California and was a dancer with the New York City Ballet before studying at Columbia University in New York. She currently lives in Oxford, England.
