João Rodrigues (1561–1634, or perhaps 1558–1633) was a Portuguese member of the Society of Jesus (a Jesuit) who carried out missionary work in Japan.[1] He wrote several books, including in 1603 a Japanese–Portuguese dictionary entitled Vocabvlario da Lingoa de Iapam (archaic Portuguese; in Japanese: 日葡辞書, Nippo jisho, in English: Vocabulary of the Language of Japan) and in 1604 a Japanese grammar entitled Arte da lingoa de Iapam (archaic Portuguese; in Japanese: 日本大文典, Nihon-dai bunten; in English, Art of the Language of Japan).

The character of Martin Alvito in the James Clavell book Shōgun & the adapted TV miniseries Shogun is loosely based on Rodrigues. He was portrayed in the miniseries by Damien Thomas.
