Brain worker

This is the translation that was listed on the talk page: For first, I'll write about that I haven't written anything here, on Wiki and for the second I want to show that there is no point in writing anyway. Since human has two brainhalves, one wild and the other sensible, it seems that there is no point in talking about work in this mess. Since the wild half is meant for living in the wild and most of our surroundings are wild, then what is left for the sensible half? Bearcat 07:39, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I noticed your article on the Lincean Academy, and recalled that I had already seen an article under the Italian name, Accademia dei Lincei. I suppose the articles should be merged. / Uppland 13:01, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Please review edits

You may not be aware that a separate page covering the region of west Papua has been allowed by John for the last few days - though he did move it to "Western New Guinea", redirect "West New Guinea" to point at it, replace west Papua in article with West New Guinea. None the less a separate page to allow existing text I wrote for 'West Papua' to be used for the region that now covers both West Irian Jaya Province and Papua Province.

As John only edited the region page to prevent the words 'west' & 'Papua' from getting too close together, and left two redundant copies of the otherwise identical text; I have been carefully extracting anything that did not apply to the new Papua Province. That's why some animals had been left in & others removed.

I have also attempted to put an explanatory note at the top of the article (This page is about ...) but John & Wik keep removing them.

As promised, I have been working on getting assistance to resolve the John/Wik/Papua issue. In the meanwhile could you please consider whether your edits are factural or not. My apology if I should have warned you about the content having been moved to West Papua/Western New Guinea'. Thank you.--Daeron 19:24, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes I agree a one word description is less than ideal, but I live in dread of another haranguing; I'll put up with it rather than allow dreadfull things being done, but I don't like being harassed nor others being so. Do you have any idea how long this Wikipedia:Requested_moves has been around for? The other thing I've been working on is a suggestion to the AMA group to help obscure articles like West Papua.--Daeron 19:48, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Re: Pashtun

Hello Joe, Thanks for your feedback! And i hope that this is the proper way to reply - i am still somewhat picking my way around here. I will try and put together some information and citations on the subject of Pashtun origins. Might take a bit of time, hopefully not too long. Of course, somebody might change it all back to the "lost tribes" view immediately afterwards :) Kamran 22:58, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Any particular reason for adding Category:English Civil War to Royalist? It's basically a disambiguation page. The relevant article for the English Civil War is Cavaliers (which, I'm afraid, is barely more than a stub). -- Jmabel | Talk 06:55, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)

Err, no. It's just the way wikipedia works for me. When I see a page without a category I itch to put it in one. Just happens that the way I got there was due to the civil war. My change was not meant as a definitive category change. I agree it probably is a disambiguation page; perhaps you would like to change it?

Black Jews

I was the person who added the entry on Black Jews -- that you deleted. Indeed, I too wasn't sure if I had put it in the most appropriate place, however, to say that it was giving the subgroup more attention than Sephardim, etc., is to ignore that the preceding text below which I placed it had the usual discussion of Beta Israel, including the derogatory "Falasha." I feel it is extremely important to mention other Jews of color, and in particular African American Jews, whenever Ethiopian Jews are introduced because it is misleading for people to conclude the only Jews of color are Ethiopian.

Perhaps a single line and a link at the place I put it would be more appropriate, with the larger text somewhere else. However, since I am fairly new to Wikipedia and don't want you to erase my work, how about if you do that? Here is the text you deleted:

In 1995, a group of Jews of color from the United States and abroad met in Chicago to form the Alliance of Black Jews, estimating black Jews in the United States to number about 200,000, or about three percent of the American Jewish population. The figure, which included "black Hebrew" and "Israelite" congregations not necessarily recognized by mainstream Judaism, and also black Reform, Conservation, Orthodox and Reconstructionist Jews by birth or conversion, was based in part on the Jewish Population Study that gave various figures ranging from 120,000 to 260,000. Some prominent Black Jews are named in the list of Black Jews.

(In deleting it, you wrote:)

Inclusion of this would give more space to discussion in this article of Jews of color in the United States than we give to Ashkenazim or Sephardim. This may well belong somewhere in Wikipedia (although I'd sure like to see a citation), but not here. -- Jmabel | Talk 22:19, Jan 16, 2005 (UTC)

One of the things I found intriguing about Wikipedia was that it allowed you to post without signing up. However, since I guess I'm becoming a part of this community, I have done so. Username is robinbirk

If you are reading this... The first thing I would do is to create an article on Alliance of Black Jews, where you can reasonably go on at great length. You don't mention what article you put this in, and I don't recall. Given, however, that they are only 3% of even American Jews, if it was in "Jew" it was, indeed, inappropriate. It would be appropriate in "Jewish_American#Population". I will also reply on your page. -- Jmabel | Talk 18:10, Feb 6, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll put it there (later, as I too am going out). At some point, however, I think the original area (I'll find it later) that I spoke of that had the potentially misinforming entry vis-a-vis Ethiopian Jews should be edited. robinbirk

Dubious categorization

In what sense is Image:Burning of Sodomites.jpg "gay art"? That seems to me like calling a picture of a lynching "African American art". -- Jmabel | Talk 06:50, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

Actually lynching is not an uncommon theme in African American art (see here). Likewise, depictions of gays being persecuted is not an uncommon theme in gay art -- for instance, not long ago the National Holocaust Museum showed an exhibit featuring artwork from gay holocaust survivors. Of course, you're more than welcome to remove the drawing from the category if you feel strongly or to edit the definition I supplied for gay art in Category:Gay art -- this is after all a fairly nebulous category. Take care. -- Queerudite 12:53, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Nihilartikel

No, I don't have a reference, and no, I am not a Joyce expert.

However, I CAN say that I was exposed to the idea that "quark" was a typo in a printed source before I'd even read Portrait of the Artist. But more importantly, some years later, I'd heard the idea agreed to by a student who wrote their Master's Thesis on Ulysses. Since that time, I had thought that this interpretation was considered, if not accepted, by the mainstream of Joycean scholars. While an internet search conducted in response to your objection found nothing that specifically calls the word a typo, plenty call it a nonsense word. I can understand why the interpretation that Joyce had composed intending that "K" has found adherents; it is the rhyme with bark and Mark. However, I don't think that the internal rhyme created is essential to a reading of the segment; it would read as well if "quark" were rendered "quart"; Gell-Man's beer hall interpretation to support his pronunciation is justified, I think. Further, it is quite established that Joyce was quite amenable to allowing the residue of accident to be preserved in his manuscript. And there I can reference the well-known occurence that during the dictation of Finnegans a visitor had knocked on Joyce's door, to which he had replied "come in." These words were immediately included by his stenographer; thereupon, he looked towards Joyce for approval of the words' immediate deletion. Joyce smirked and told the stenographer to let the words stand. Given that, and given that there is considerable doubt that Joyce was aware of the Middle English form at one time meaning "to caw," and given that the most common interpretation of "quark" is that it was merely a mispronunciation of "quart" by a drunken pubgoer, I don't think that my statement in what after all is not an article on Joyce, but rather on words, should be dismissed out of hand simply because I am not an expert on Joyce, and can't give you a scholarly citation off the top of my head. However, if you feel so strongly about it that you feel you must delete it, go ahead; I am not expert enough in Joyce write the persuasive paper necessary, nor do I in any event wish to participate in an edit war.

Rastro 01:05, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

Revert if that is what you think; I believe though again am unwilling to fight over it that a scholarly citation is not required where I had placed the comment. AND that the comment is justifiable given the nature of Joyce's work. I think that Muster "does" in fact convey the nature of the drunken sot in the way that quark is to my mind only reputed to. I will say that I disagree, and without rearranging my life, I will try to find the printed source I remember. I will also ask your credentials in Joycean study . . . .

Rastro 02:05, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

I do find it easier to defer given your capacity regarding Finnegans.

External links

Where does it say that we are no longer to use singular when there is only one link? (I don't feel strongly enough to go against an established policy.) I've been poking around, and all I can find is this reference from Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings):

Please do not vary the wording or capitalisation of these headings, except for removing the plural "s" where there is only one link/reference/footnote.

Personally, unless there is an official policy that states otherwise, I'm going to continue using link when there is only one link, because I think it looks rather silly to use a plural form when singular is obviously (grammatically) correct (you would never say, "this article has one external links"). I don't feel particularly strongly about it, but in my experience, there are lot more one-link articles with links than multiple-link articles with link. The latter seems not to be much of a problem, really. -Aranel ("Sarah") 23:36, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yiddish/Jewish King Lear

I just changed it to match the new article about it, after seeing it on the front page (the "Did you know?" section) and then clicking on the author's name and saw that it wasn't linked to the work (it was linking just to the "King Lear" section). So... if you want to change it, don't let me stop you! I claim total ignorance, I was just going for consistency! ;-) --Fastfission 04:45, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Cervantes award

Dear Jmabel: Hi! About the Cervantes award in the page about the important Cuban writer, I thought it would be interesting to some that Juan Carlos of Spain gave it to him, because #1 I suspect the vast majority of people dont even know what the Cervantes award is in the first place, and #2, not everyonie gets to meet a king.

Now, here's a little tidbit for your amusement: I met both Queen Noor of Jordan and Princess Anne of England, both times looking for autographs. While Queen Noor granted my wish (King Hussein always encouraged his family to sign for the commoners because, I suppose, he cherished the love they got from us), Princess Anne gave me the royal no! Since I had a copy of The Arizona Republic with her on the cover in my hand; security thought I was gonna offer it to her as a present, so they let me pass..lol

I don't know. I guess that whether we leave the comment on Juan Carlos or not is a matter of opinion. To me, it results interesting to note when people have met royalty in person.

Thanks, and God bless you! Sincerely yours, "Antonio Martin the first of Wikilandia (lol, I wish!) Martin"

As far as the Portuguese is concerned, the article Negro seems ok. As for the other cultures i really cant judge. Cheers, muriel@pt 19:43, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I will not initiate a RfC against you

The fact that you acknoledge that the word "Terrorism" was present in the West Bank article and that you did not notice how it was being use, I will take as a steep toward ending this non-sence. I used that argument becouse the fact that you said that that word should be avoid, and that you have not protested against it use. As in the title, I will not seek a RfC against you, and I will deleted any accusation with this argument.

I hope that all this mess can be resolve. Messhermit 00:25, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Can you eliminate those remarks about the controversy around the West Bank? I'm already on the process of retraacting any argument against your person. Also, please take look at the West Bank article, I don't know who is putting the Word "terrorist" once again. thanks. Messhermit 01:21, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • I must say that the only thing that I object regarding "Amnistia Internacional" is the fact that at least the Page that User:Viajero is using is very controvertial. How can a Page be NPOV if it has as a motto in its top

Fujimori: ¡¡ La Justicia Peruana te reclama  !! ?. Messhermit 05:27, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Also, regarding the fact that I started to erase some of my comments and yours, I made that Thinking that it was the way to get them out of the topic. Please, there is a paragraph that said "what Messhermit" deleted. I would like you to scracht it too. Almost all my remarks regarding you have been done so, And I don't think that leaving them is appropiate. It will appear that I have not retracted. Messhermit 05:27, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

¿Me he expresado bien? Gracias.
