My off-line name is Joseph Kisolo-Ssonko. Last year I edited quite a bit as I was a philosophy student studying for a MA at Sheffield University, this year I have got a full time job and I am studying (part-time) for a PhD -- so I probally won't edit that much. I am a political activist, member of the SWP and the Respect coalition.

I've been a Wikipedian for over a year now (started Nov 2004) and I think I have started to get a good grasp of how wikipedia works though I am always learning. Occasionally I become obsessed with refreshing my watchlist and have to ban myself from editing for a few days and get on with some real work.

I have strong views about (almost) everything but I believe that I can help build an encyclopedia that manages to present balanced views. I list some of my beliefs here not so that I can push my POV but rather to give an honest account of where I am coming from so no one can accuse me of having a hidden agenda. I am in favour of Wikipedians listing their background beliefs and allegiances as a kind of Wikipedia register of interests.

I believe that the NPOV policy probably works best as a general rule of thumb. If we use it too dogmatically it probably won't bear the task. For example, sometimes certain points of view (POV) should be given prominence; an article on the shape of the globe should present the round-world view as correct and, if it mentions it at all, present the flat-world view as nutty. I realise that with articles on politics etc. this is not quite so clear cut.

My spelling is v. bad. Personally I think that it is best to be radically non-prescriptive when it comes to spelling, i.e. if people can understand it why is it wrong? However I appreciate that most people (inc' the people who mark my essays and fellow Wikipedians) disagree and will thus endeavour to keep my spell checker open or at least not mind when my abysmal spelling is corrected. This user page was full of spelling mistakes but an anonymous user has corrected them. While I don't mind this (as long as they leave the wording alone), it would probably be a better use of their time to edit non-user pages.(n.b:I have since written more and probably made more mistakes)

I support the goal of creating a wikipedia CD.

I would like to change my OS from windows 98 to Linux but I fear I am not Nerd enough.

WikiProject Anti-war open tasks
This project creates and improves articles related to anti-war activism.

Here are some tasks you can do:

WikiProject Philosophy task list
  • Charles Peirce: This article needs a lot of help. The POV is way too idiosyncratic and the style is offputting for a general audience, to say the least. You will have to be willing to go to the mat, however, with the primary author, who has been banned but has reappeared under different names.
  • Desert: At least narrow it down to being in philosophy, ethics, or morality. An actual article at any of these three would be nice, too.
  • Cesare Cremonini: created "start-level", would need new eyes and hands.
  • Fatalism: Stub-like. Needs to be cleaned up and expanded
  • Aristotelianism: Needs to be expanded
  • Logical argument: Needs work to be of use
  • Sign / Symbol: Introductions contain too much technical jargon
  • Catholic Probabilism: Pretty nearly straight from the old Catholic Encyclopedia
  • Counterfactuals: Needs fuller and more accurate summary of main theories, as well as indication of philosophical importance in other topics, notably causation and inference.
  • Human agency: Expand, correct, and reference. Any support for altering the name?
  • Being and Nothingness: An Essay on Phenomenological Ontology Sartre's magnum opus, barely more than a stub
  • Übermensch: desperately needs knowledgable attention
  • Kant's Groundwork: re-write, expand
  • Existentialism: in dire need of a cleanup and reworking of information
  • African philosophy: needs a lot of work!
