Jit Sin High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jit Sin High School is a high school located in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia. It used to share the same compound with Jit Sin Independent High School in Jalan Aston, but later moved into a new school compound in Taman Sri Rambai. Students attend classes from Form 1 to Form 6, and these are organized into the morning and afternoon sessions. Jit Sin High School has posted unprecedented success in public examinations like the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), Sijil Pengajian Menengah (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pengajian Menengah (STPM). This success is largely due to a merit-based selection of students from primary education. The minimum requirement for acceptance to study in Jit Sin High School is a maximum of 9 points scored in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), although the requirements are much more lenient for students from its feeder school.

[edit] Recent Developments

Recently, the JSHS Harmonica and Choir Club and JSHS Environmental Cadets have been disbanded as a uniformed body. This significant change to the school co-curricular system was made by the current principal, Mr. Tan Kim Tong. While this implementation by the current principal has caused unrest among the school ranks, the principal has insisted on this change. This development is viewed by a small minority to be an indirect way by the current principal to distinguish himself from the former principal, Mr. Hwong Seng. Whether this change has shown any significant improvement to the school co-curricular system remains yet to be seen.

[edit] Academic Achievements

Jit Sin High School has always set the benchmark for academic success in terms of public examination results or academic related competitions. Every year, there are many Jit Sin students who have obtained straight As in PMR, SPM and STPM and often ranked among the top few in the nation.

[edit] Controversies and criticism

Although Jit Sin High School is notable for its success academically, there have been certain issues that have attracted criticism from parents and students. The most recent controversy being an incident when a disciplinary teacher was attacked by a parent whose child's hair which was deemed to long by the school. The matter attracted wide media coverage across the nation as many felt that by cutting students hair, the school had violated human rights. The incident was finally resolved after a public apology was issued by the parent.

Most notable of Jit Sin High School's controversial policies is a lack of transparency regarding school happenings. Major disciplinary incidents such as the defacement of school property which happened in 2005 (the second time occurring in 2006) has remained largely unknown to the Chinese community in Malaysia that regards the school as an elite school. The school's administration has always played down the significance of these events, at times going to the extent of covering up these issues. Though actions by the school bear no malignant intent, it has deprived the community of knowledge about its current student disciplinary status.

Jit Sin conduct spot checks almost every month and consficate cell phones for 6 months without returning no matter what condition. Prefects goes into class during recess and assembly and mess up the student's bags looking for items like basketballs, CDs, USB Drives and Liquid Papers without informing students, and the students will wonder why their possessions disappeared.

The school principal and teachers will go to nearby Cyber-Cafes aka Internet Centres and round up students like illegal immigrants, the principle will then spank the students back at school in his office without giving any chance of explanations and inform the parents. This is a total violation of human rights.
