[edit] Great job on Kollam article
Just wanted to say that i think you have done a wonderful job on the Kollam article. cheers -- PlaneMad|YakYak 19:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Administration section
Jisha, Good effort put on Kollam page. Keep going.
Btw, the Administration section in the Kollam page is not related to the city. It talks about the administration of Kollam district, and hence should be moved to there. You should include the city corporation details such as No. of wards, Mayor's name, the hierarchy of the Police force in Kollam city, etc. You can leave me a message for any help. -- Rajith Mohan (Talk to me...) :-) 10:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Enikku vayikkunnathellam cross-check cheyyunna oru duswabhavam pitichirikkukayaanu :-) Can you please check whether Marco Polo really came to Kollam in 1275 ? I saw it in some sites but he reached Kublai Khan's captital (starting from Europe in 1271) in mid-1275. It sounds very implausible that he could have travelled all the way to South India by the end of the year. Many sites mention the years of his Indian visits as 1288 and 1292 (or 1293). Btw, http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12410/12410-8.txt is the record of his visit to Kollam (search for Coilum) Tintin (talk) 13:55, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'll put a query in the Wikipedia:Reference desk to check whether he visited India in 1275. Most online sources say that he visited India in 1288 and 1292 but This article mentions that "Europe knew of it (Mahabalipuram ) as early as the 13th century when, following Marco Polo's visit, it appears in the Catalan Map of 1275." Does encarta say that he visited Kollam in 1292 ? I am not able to access it because it is 'premium content'. Tintin (talk) 14:39, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I was looking in encarta.com. The gutenberg.com link above contains Marco Polo's travellogue and it mentions about "Coilum". I have posted the query here Tintin (talk) 17:03, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Or we can just remove the year and wait for better/conclusive references. Tintin (talk) 02:46, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Marco Polo's book at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12410/12410.txt talks about Kannur too. It must be the same journey because Kollam is in Chapter 12, Kanyakumari is 13, and "Eli" is 14. Marco Polo wasn't born in 1250. As per the book :
- CHAPTER XXIV (CONCERNING THE KINGDOM OF ELI.) : Eli is a kingdom towards the west, about 300 miles from Comari (Kanyakumari). The people are Idolaters and have a king, and are tributary to nobody; and have a peculiar language. We will tell you particulars about their manners andtheir products, and you will better understand things now because we are drawing near to places that are not so outlandish.[NOTE 1] There is no proper harbour in the country, but there are many great rivers with good estuaries, wide and deep.[NOTE 2] Pepper and ginger grow there, and other spices in quantities.[NOTE 3]
The Note 1 explains that Eli is the present Ezhimala Hill which is a few miles north of Kannur. Many online articles says that Polo called Kannur the "emporium of spices". That is probably an alternate translation of the "spices in quantities" above. Tintin (talk) 18:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Can you access http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/p#a3613 ? This is in the volume 2 of the book mentioned there. (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/12410 is the next level From here you have to pick the download link for plain text at the end.) Tintin (talk) 04:05, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Thank you, Jisha. Your work on Kollam kollaam. Kerala Piravi aashamsakal. Cheers!--thunderboltz(Deepu) 15:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Jisha, Thanks for your compliments :) .. I will also try to improve the Kollam page. I will try to get some snaps too to fit in to the article. -- Rajith Mohan (Talk to me...) :-) 09:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- I found that pic on the Standard of living in India page. By the way, did you take a look at WP:INCITIES? It contains a lot of useful information.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 09:51, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.
Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

[edit] Welcome Template
Hi, when you post a welcome message to a newcomer, could you use {{subst:welcome}}, {{subst:welcome2}}, etc., instead of just {{welcome}}, {{welcome2}}, etc. It means that the text of that particular template will be added to the talk page of the user instead of the user just seeing a sort of mirror image of it. Two advantages are that if the actual template is vandalized, the message you have sent will not be altered in any way, and also less load is placed on the server. For more information, please see WP:SUBST. Cheers. Langara College 19:46, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Coimbatore
I saw that you have changed all the section/subsections levels in the Coimbatore article. I had grouped and organized them in Level 2/3/4 titles so that it reads better in the Contents listing. The way you have changed it, the Content list is not as readable. May be my grouping was not perfect but I think we should organize them using Level 2/3/4 formatting rather than using bold text. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 17:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Dear Jishacj, what's your problem, why do you remove the external link to my website fort-kochi.com. This is not an commercial website and very valuable for the travellers of Western countries. When I arrived here three years ago, I would have been happy s.o. had made such an website for me. I get already now emails from people who like it and ask for some details. Kind regards Doris
Hello! I feel there is a missunderstanding. The wikitravel travel guide is a commercial website, which should not be in Wikipedia. My fort-kochi.com website is a NON commercial website. I did it as assistance for the Indian travellers, who want to come to Fort Cochin. Regards, Doris

- Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Spread the WikiLove by smiling to someone else, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Smile to others by adding {{subst:smile}}, {{subst:smile2}} or {{subst:smile3}} to their talk page with a friendly message. Happy editing!
Can you please take a look at the highway numbers. The last two don't look right. Do you have plans for getting this up to FA standard in the near future ? Tintin (talk) 13:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- In maps like this and this, it is Koyilandi that lies in the exact spot where Kollam is in that map. This map which has Kollam shows a railway line that passes through it. I checked in irctc.co.in for trains between Ernakulam and Mangalore. There is a stop in Koyilandi for some trains but no Kollam. Tintin (talk) 12:06, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Wait. There seems to be a place called Kollam which is a part of Koyilandy. See this google search Tintin (talk) 12:13, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
That image was deleted because it was a copyvio, it seems. You can see some free images (on Kollam) over here. Upload the ones you feel fit for the article. Regards,--thunderboltz(Deepu) 14:10, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

- Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
- New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
- Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

- Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
- As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. - How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

[edit] Pallipuram
Hi there
I'm doing a little more research on Pallippuram. As I get data, I would redo the entire captioning of the article once again. In the meanwhile, you are welcome to append changes —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aniljay (talk • contribs) 05:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Pallippuram
Hello there
I am trying hard to get the latest census data. With regard to the use of Malayalam words in the article, I have honestly tried to minimise them, however, the ones you see there are purely meant for the 'effect' it could possibly create. Thanks all the way for the other things that you did. I am a recently joined wikipeadian, and you know what I mean! Happy that you are interested in this small village, and have joined the effort.--Aniljay 11:47, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
It's done. Sorry for the trouble, although inadvertant!Aniljay 12:00, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
Roger!! Aniljay 12:33, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
Jisha, sorry, I was not around here much in the last few days. Did some very minor edits, but don't know any of the stuff mentioned in the article.
Aniljay, I hope there are no copyright issues. Did Njaralathu Rama Poduval play chenda too ? I thought he did only edakka. Can you try to change the tone of the article a little more encyclopaediac (ie, a little more serious and less informal).

[edit] Thanungu perukku
Never heard of it. I'll call home and check whether it is something that is well-known. Tintin (talk) 11:21, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- It might be (bad?) Tamil or something. It could even be one of those desperate Malayalee attempts to mock/impersonate/communicate with Tamils resulting in completely meaningless terms(!). Thanungu sounds like thaangu (to/for you), i.e. thanikk(u) in Malayalam. The Tamil word perukku simply means pErkk(u) (to/for name). --Kuaichik 06:30, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

- Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
- Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

If the movie is notable/successful, then a disambiguation page might be needed. Otherwise, I think Pallikoodam should point to the school, and the film should be disambiguated to Pallikoodam (film). - Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.

The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.
- Arbitration: Three cases are either in progress or have recently ended.
- Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/India-Pakistan regarding the activities of various Indian and Pakistani editors on pages related to Indian subcontinent history topics, the national status of various pre-Partition figures, and edit-warring over Indic scripts and WikiProject tags was held and concluded in late February- early March. As a result of this, four Pakistani users, Siddiqui, Szhaider, Nadirali and Unre4L were all banned for one year for disruption via edit-warring and confrontationalism.
- Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Sathya Sai Baba 2 regarding a dispute over the article of the religious teacher closed in early March with four users indefinitely banned from the article.
- Currently, Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Freedom_skies is in the evidence phase. It is concerned with the editing of Freedom_skies, who edits articles on ancient Indian history, primarily civilisation articles such as Indian mathematics and related articles, as well as Buddhism articles such as Pusyamitra Sunga, as well as those pertaining to the propagation of Mahayana Buddhism to China such as Bodhidharma and Zen.

Note from Editor's Desk
|
- Welcome to the March 2007 edition of our newsletter.
- Congratulations to one of our most respected writers, bureaucrats and administrators, Nichalp, who is now entrusted with the oversight permission. In addition Riana has joined the administrative ranks after a successful RfA.
- On a sad note, Nobleeagle, who was responsible for the creation of the Punjab WikiProject, and was largely responsible for Indian cricket team, Bhagat Singh and Lage Raho Munna Bhai becoming GAs, as well as working heavily in Indian religious and cricket work, has left the project after having his identity revealed.
- More generally, certain Indian users have recently been subject to real life harassment by banned users, etc. If this is affecting you in real life, please do not hesitate to contact Wikimedia board members for assistance, or ask a senior Wikipedian to solicit help on your behalf if required.
- Nishkid64, a prolific contributor and administrator, is currently undergoing surgery to fix a congenital heart defect. You can wish him well here.
- Weekly Collaboration (Shortcut:WP:INCOTW): Collaboration of the Week has fallen from its once high feats. Please drop by and help rejuvenate it.
- As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome, including requests for copyediting, photographic work, peer review, etc. We'll be very happy to include them here.

- Translation Department: Can you read and write any languages of India? Do you know multiple languages and are looking to keep your skills at a high level or improve them? If so, the Translation Depeartment may be for you!
The translation department of the India WikiProject aims to utilize high-quality non-English material related to India for the goals of the project. This includes both translating articles from and to other-language Wikipedias as well as assisting contributors with non-English sources. The department aims to provide services in transliteration, formulating scripts for various languages, as well as translating articles from one language to another and validating sources in other languages to that of the encyclopedia article. If you are looking for a friendly translator here is your go-to point. Currently, we are still seeking representation for Kashmiri, Nepali, Oriya, Sindhi and Tulu, as well as reinforcements in all other languages.
