From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smokey J Cat was born in Milford, Delaware in 1988 on a local farm. He was soon brought into the Walls family. He lived as an outdoor cat, hardly going inside, and he loved it outside, he was then brought inside in 2001. He lived inside for four years happily, after four years inside, Smokey came down with diabetes. He then formed a urination problem in the house and was then moved outside, with a bed easily accessible in the workshop connected to the garage, allowing him a nice shelter from the elements, something he did not have in his first twelve years. At age seventeen, Smokey developed a problem in his abdomen causing it to expand. All elderly cats develop this complication but it is fatal in one in ten. Smokey was put to rest at Delmarva Emergency Animal Hospital in Dover, Delaware on September 2nd, 2006.

[edit] Nine Lives
Smokey J Cat was an avid hunter and born to be free. At age five he escaped his carrier at the vet and went missing in Harrington, miles from home in Milford. After three months he was found in the backyard of a Harrington woman and returned home.
Smokey J Cat was an independent cat that would go missing on a regular basis for up to weeks at a time and return home as healthy as ever.
Smokey was hit by a car trying to cross the high-way to hunt in the field. This would kill most cats, but Smokey survived. He had to be fitted with much metal in order for his hip and legs to recover, giving him a frankenstein appearance.
When you add all these events together and the fact that Smokey lived for two years with diabetes and didn't even let that stop him, Smokey lived well past his nine lives as well as being a few months off of doubling his life expectancy.
[edit] 2001-2006
2001 was a major point in Smokey J Cat's life. Action Jack III was discovered by Ali Walls in the local ACE Hardware parking lot. Only two weeks old Action Jack III absolutely had to stay inside. Realizing how nice it was to have a cat around the house, the Walls family opened their doors and the other cats including Smokey and Dwezel slowly became indoor/outdoor cats.
Smokey developed diabetes around age fifteen. He needed insulin in his final two years. But problems would occur when, because of the insulin, Smokey would go into a diabetic episode where he would lose all senses and would need to be revived with corn syrup. Smokey however did get the special treatment of wet-food during this period in his life, while the other cats had to eat dry-food.
[edit] Smokey's Family
Smokey leaves behind humans, Cathy, Bill, Ali, Teddy(Owner of Smokey), Ben and Jim Walls, whom all loved Smokey dearly. He also leaves behind cats Action Jack III and Dwezel. Action Jack III, named after action hero Action Jackson is an exceptionally fit cat, while Dwezel, named after Rock Star Frank Zappa's son Dwezel, is an extremely obese cat.
[edit] How Smokey Helped Dwezel
Although Smokey was not overweight at all, in fact very fit, he still came down with diabetes. Dwezel is obese and stands high chances at the moment of developing diabetes. Now knowing what diabetes can do to a cat, the Walls family has put Dwezel on a diet and after a few weeks, it appears to be effective.
