Jimmy McPartland (James Douglas McPartland) (March 15, 1907, Chicago, Illinois- March 13, 1991 , Port Washington, New York) was an american cornetist.
He started playing violin at age 5, then took up the cornet at age 15. His first musical job was with the Blue Friars, with Bud Freeman (tenor sax), Frank Teschemacher (clarinet), Dick McPartland (banjo/guitar), James Lanigan (Bass, Tuba and Violin), Joe Sullivan (piano) and Dave Tough (drums).
Like many great musicians McPartland got his start at an early age and was among many others soon to become famous.
The younger brother of guitarist Dick McPartland, Jimmy was a member of the legendary Austin High School Gang in the 1920s. In 1924 Jimmy took Bix Beiderbecke's place in the Wolverine Orchestra. He joined Ben Pollack's band in 1927, was one of the main soloists (along with Benny Goodman) and he stayed with the band into 1929. From 1926 to 1927, he worked with Art Kassel. Also in 1927, he was a part of the now well remembered McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans recording session. From 1927 to '29, he was featured with the Ben Pollack orchestra. In 1929, Jimmy went to New York City, and played with a number of small combos. 1930 he moved to Chicago. He worked with Russ Columbo (1931-1932) and the Harry Reser band (1933-1935) From 1936-1941, he led his own band until he was drafted in the Army during World War II (1942-1944).
At this time he met his future wife in Belgium, English pianist Marian Turner and they moved 1946 to the USA.
McPartland worked with Eddie Condon, Art Hodes, and other Chicago jazz veterans and often leading his own band.
Although the McPartlands divorced in 1970, they continued to work together, stayed friends and re-married just a few weeks before Jimmy's death .
Jimmy played the cornet given to him by Bix Beiderbecke throughout his career and died of lung cancer in Port Washington, New York in 1991, three days before his 84th birthday.
