Jimmy Magee

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jimmy Magee is a longstanding RTÉ sports broadcaster. He was born in New York City and brought up in Greenore, Co. Louth, Ireland. Magee has been a broadcaster covering a variety of sports, including Gaelic football, soccer, basketball and various Olympic Games events for over fifty years. In 2006 Magee attended his eleventh World Cup. He is also known as "The Memory Man" because of his unique facility to remember names, dates, etc. in a sporting context,

Some of his one-liners in commentaries have become famous or infamous (what are affectionately known in the broadcasting industry as Colemanballs after the famed commentating clangers of BBC broadcaster David Coleman). During a World Cup he told viewers "Ardiles strokes the ball like it was a part of his anatomy".[1] On Sunday the 25th of March live on RTE Pro Box live he mistakenly lable Jim 'The Pink Panther' Rock as 'The Blue Panther' leading to embarrassment on his part.

His son Paul played for Shamrock Rovers between 1975 and 1978 winning the League Cup in 1977.
