James P. "Jim" McGovern (born 20 November 1959), an American politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 3 January 1997, representing the 3rd District of Massachusetts. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, earned a Masters of Public Administration at American University in Washington, D. C., and was a staff member for Senator George McGovern of South Dakota (to whom he is not related) and for Representative Joe Moakley before entering the House.

McGovern currently serves as Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee, sits on the House Budget Committee, and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

McGovern is the author of a resolution which would force President Bush to end the Iraq War. His priorities include protecting the environment, expanding civil rights, and providing affordable health care for all Americans. [1]

McGovern was one of five members of Congress arrested on 28 April 2006 after protesting outside the Sudanese Embassy over atrocities in the Darfur region.[2]
