[edit] Vanderbilt
Not really; as the default position of the side toolbar is on the left, the first image of an article is usually placed on the right. Otherwise things look a tad claustrophobic (especially at lower resolutions), as the eyes expect to see text on the left. The article is not yet long enough for a centered or left-aligned image, anyway. Cheers, -- Hadal 20:15, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] RE the article on Margaret Trudeau
I was about to insert a book cover with her image but saw where one had been removed by User:Angela: (cur) (last) . . 23:06, 17 Nov 2003 . . Angela (remove photo - see Wikipedia:Possible copyright infringements) - However, while doing the biography for Errol Flynns wife, Lili Damita, I see that the Image: ErrollFlynn.jpg "Cover of My Wicked, Wicked Ways, by Erroll Flynn" was inserted by a Wikipedia Administrator, User:Zoe -- Can someone clarify this? Should I delete Flynn or insert Trudeau? JillandJack 16:56, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
- The removal of the Trudeau image isn't material to your case - it was removed on its own merits. Similarly, the Flynn one remains in its. Hopefully what you upload will be acceptable under the "fair use" doctrine - take a look at Wikipedia:Fair use for pointers as to what is and isn't fair use. Fair use is, however, problematic, so it would be better if you can find a public domain image of her, or can persuade the owner of some image to grant us licence to use it here - see Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission for sample letters/emails to send. Oh, and my compliments on checking this matter out so thoroughly. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:28, 21 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi, recently you entered names into the List of Jews page. However something went wrong as in the process you messed up the page and almost the entire page was showing things twice over, so I had to revert it. [edit] Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society
Hello Jill and/or Jack. How are you? You recently added two sentences to the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. One is:
Some of its leaders adopted extreme positions, declaring that the use of the English language should be banned completely in Quebec.
This one is quite a big generalization. Do you have the name(s) of the leader(s) and the quote(s) which would validate such a statement? In which publication(s) did you read this opinion?
The second one is:
Gilles Rheaume, a former president of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society, walked from Montreal to Quebec City where he urinated on the statue of British General James Wolfe, who defeated French General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
This is anecdotic and alone like that it is almost as if the article was trying to tell us that maybe the leaders of the SSJB are immature and possibly irrational in the way they behave. This breaks the rule of NPOV by quite a lot and probably is not relevant in the article of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. If it is actually based on something that Mister Rhéaume did at some point in his life, it could very well be included in the Gilles Rhéaume article. Do you have a date and more info on the circumstances in which it occurred? Or the newspaper article which reported it?
The reason I am asking all these questions is that I am presently collecting notes on the SSJB and planning to rewrite the article. I am busy translating them from French to English at the present, but eventually I will restructure this article by adding headings and develop its content.
Regards,

[edit] La/Madame/Mary Bolduc/Travers
I changed the article about La Bolduc so that it again says English Canadians more often call her Madame Bolduc. It seems to me the use of her maiden name is a recent development. The bio at the Site Mary Travers suggests that she was known as Bolduc throughout her career. However, that raises the question of why it's the Site Mary travers. If you can enlighten me about how she came to be known as Mary Travers, I'd appreciate it. And now that I think about it I'm going to go back and revise the article so my point is made in a less contentious way. TronTonian 19:56, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Canadian politicians
Hi...when we're categorizing politicians, we should only use the category "Canadian politicians" for people who don't fit any subcategory (like, say, David Orchard.) For example, there's no need to list John F. Stairs in the categories "Canadian politicians" and "Nova Scotia politicians" and "Members of the Canadian House of Commons" -- both of the other two are already subcategories of "Canadian politicians" anyway. "Canadian politicians" should serve only to link the various subcategories and to collect the relatively few political figures who don't fit any of them. Otherwise, a politician should just be listed in the appropriate subcategories, because by the time we have every Canadian politician who's ever been notable listed in here, "Canadian politicians" is going to be too cluttered and confusing to be useful if we're not careful. [edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...
- ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
- ...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.
- Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 18:02, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Moving pages
I noticed that you moved The Black Dahlia to Elizabeth Short. You did this by copying the text from one article to another. This is bad! It separates the edit history into two pieces and makes it harder to keep track of changes to the article. (Since I'm an administrator, I was able to fix things, so that the edit history is now combined again.) Instead, you should use Special:Movepage, which you can use with the "move" tab that's usually at the top of the web page, just above the article itself. (See meta:Help:Renaming (moving) a page for more information.) Let me know if you have any troule moving pages in the future.
By the way, I also disagreed with your move, so I moved the article back to The Black Dahlia. (I've explained my reasonsn on Talk:The Black Dahlia.) But this is a separate issue from how the page is moved. You may very well be right about what name the page should have, and you may decide to move it back to Elizabeth Short. Just make sure to use Special:Movepage if you do so! ^_^

[edit] Image:Ptrudeau.jpg?
Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:Ptrudeau.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? Thanks so much, Dbenbenn 20:43, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I noticed that you upload lots of images (which is great!) without indicating their source (not so great). Besides copyright issues, saying where you got an image improves verifiability, and also helps teach others where to find similar images. For example, I'm curious where you get all the great images of early-1900s historical figures, since I'd like to upload similar images about mathematicians. - Re your Question about Image:Robertborden.jpeg. Many thanks for pointing this out. Neither of us are much good on the computer and it took us a while to figure it out. Funny though, after replacing the old image with the new in the template for the Canadian PM's, they still remain on the image page list. Thanks again. JillandJack 14:03, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
-
- Ah. Right. When you replace an image in a template, the old image doesn't know it's been replaced until all the pages that use the template have been edited. I went through the list of prime ministers and did minor edits at all of them.
-
- Might have been easier to just upload the new image over the old image, with the same file name.
-
- By the way, are you aware of the Commons? If you put your images up there, they can be used by all other Wikipedias, for example pl:Robert Borden. dbenbenn | talk 20:54, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] No...
You don't need to tell me, friends, whether or not I "need" to apologize. I can tell well enough myself, and right now, I do need to apologize to you. I spoke too soon and without knowing the context, and had a bad feeling right afterwards but I had to leave the premises in a hurry for a real life commitment. I've struck it through, replaced with "allegedly", made it clear I wasn't endorsing that representation of what you were doing myself, and I brought myself down a peg for how I put it at first. I am sorry.
About not degrading others making honest efforts, yay! I have to say, though, that I feel a bit uncomfortable reading on your user page that you "are not interested in having those who have been part of this biased input pretend innocence and ask questions. Those people will not be responded to under any circumstances." Now, every Wikipedian is a volunteer and only contributes in whichever way they feel called to, and we can't say anyone here has an obligation to respond to anything else. I'm afraid this makes edit conflicts more personal and adversarial than necessary (or productive in resolving anything). It also misses the point that a POV edit may just have been, to the poster, "conventional wisdom" that they really might not have sat back from and looked at the way you/we/anyone else looks at it.
It really does feel like it's saying "if you made in the past something I thought was a POV edit, you're beyond help, and not worth talking to in the future." Even if Stephen Hawking made this statement about theoretical astrophysics, it would seem a bit high on himself, so it's distressing to read on a consensus-driven, volunteer-written Wiki. The assumption such a poster, whose NPOV-ness you disagree with, wasn't making an "honest effort" to the best of their ability too, in many cases (there are plenty of obvious exceptions, of course), undercuts the wonderful sentiments on your message on my talk page.
To be clear, I don't think you said this to knock people down, just to guard your editing time against cat-and-mouse debates. But there's a big personal sting in how I think people will read it, and see Adam Bishop on the WP:CWNB thinking you were talking about him.
Speaking of personal sting, "No need to apologize, looking at some of your history, I understand what you are?" I guess you either mean an inclusionist voter (on real, remotely encyclopedic subjects) on vfd, a patient consensus-builder who tries to move conflicts ahead with engagement and discussion (see Talk:Belinda Stronach), or that I'm just a bad editor. Trust me, I feel like a piece of shit enough already for having, with a badly chosen word, inadvertently flamed you. If you mean the latter, you can tell me directly. Please do. And I'd say nothing further of it... Samaritan 00:13, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Dysfunctional family and Redpath Sugar
Wow. You're right, that's weird.
The Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion page is only for listing images and sound files and the like. For pages like this, you should list them on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. (It's a little complicated to list a site there, so if you need help, I'll help you out.)
This looks like a real-live bug, though. I'd suggest you list it on Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), and ask them what should be done with the page. I'll bet someone there will know the best way to take care of the articles.
Best regards, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 17:06, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
- I looked through Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), and I actually figured out how to fix the probem! I fixed it for both pages, and they should both work now. If you run into any other pages with the same problem, just let me know. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 18:45, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Quebec topics
Just a quick question about your POV tagging of Quebec topics and categories: is there any particular reason why you can't just make the changes you'd like to see? If you want the categories to be merged, is there any reason why you can't just do the merging? Bearcat 03:01, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Follow-up regarding the Quebec politicians category: every province already has its own subcategory for politicians from that province, in order to include members of the provincial legislature. Bearcat 04:03, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
But the "Be Bold" rule applies just as much as the POV tags. I can easily see a distinction between "POV that a user should tag" (ie. "recognizes the bias issue, but doesn't know enough about the subject to fix it personally") and "POV that a user should just go ahead and fix themselves" (ie. "knows the subject".) There's no special onus on anybody to do anything, except that which applies to us all. Bearcat 05:22, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia doesn't have a policy against subcategories for particular provinces or states, as long as they're not treated like national categories (ie. it can only be a subcategory of the national one, not an independent subcategory of "politics by country".) Though I am seriously considering replacing the "(PROVINCE) politicians" categories with "Member of the provincial legislature from (province)" ones. Bearcat 05:30, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Seven US states have their own individual "writers" categories; four that I've seen have their own "musicians" categories. The only reason more don't is that nobody's done them, not because there's a policy against them. Every state has its own politicians category; "Canadian politicians" will be completely unusable if we don't chunk them out into subcategories and keep as few articles as possible in the main one. Bearcat 05:50, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Either way, you left at least two article as inconsistent and you aren't marking your summaries.
It would appear your definition of "Canadian actor" is not that of the status quo. The parent category of Category:Canadian actors is Category:Actors by nationality, which to me means what their citizenship is or where they were born.

[edit] Dr. Hugo Heyrman
Hi JillandJack,
I noticed you moved the article for Dr. Hugo Heyrman to Hugo Heyrman. Did you check the talk pages? In general I would agree with the move (infact I moved it myself a couple of times), but the article seems to written by the man himself, who is quite keen to use the identity 'Dr Hugo'.
The initial creation of the article was a bit messy. I did some checking for notability, copyvios and Google tests of 'Dr. Hugo Heyrman' vs 'Hugo Heyrman', so following discussion I decided to let it stand, whilst cleaning up most of the redirects and duplicate articles. -- Solipsist 07:45, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] We meet again...
So, DW/Joe Canuck/Angelique/whoever else, congratulations...you're pretty good at changing identities, but why don't you just stay relatively well-behaved for once? If you didn't always revert to doing and saying the same things that always get you banned, we would probably never notice when you return.
- Elaborate? "You are Angelique." Don't be shy, we know it's you :) Adam Bishop 22:12, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You have been blocked by Adam Bishop (a ban extended by myself) under suspicion of being the banned user DW on account that you have the same password, use an IP from a similar location, and display exactly the same characteristics of DW and other users believed to be DW, particularly "Angelique". - Um. I was just reading the "developer help" page, and I noticed that it says that there is no evidence suggesting a connection here...and this person has been banned for three months and nobody has done anything about that? Am I the only one who thinks that is extraordinarily wrong? Everyking 08:54, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Abuse in delete attempt for the Radical Lawyers category
I have reverted several changes made by user JillandJack with respect to the radical lawyers category. First of all, I disagree with the proposal to delete the category because the category is not branding those who defend unpopular individuals, but rather those who have been influenced by ideologies outside of the mainstream in their legal careers and proceeded through highly unconventional means. Thus, I see no point-of-view problem and think that all those in the category should be there.
My main problem, however, has to do with the fact that this user has empties most of the category while the deletion request is still pending. The notice of the request explicitly states that the category should not be emptied while the request is still pending. The changes made by this user emptied out but all but one of the listings, which clearly is an attempt to preempt a ruling on the subject. It also seems to be an attempt to manipulate the appearance of the category by making it seem as though it cannot contain a coherent collection of articles.
I find the user's basis for removing articles from the category to be rather ironic given his/her basis for disputing the existence of the category. He/she premises the argument in favor of deletion on the belief that the term "radical" is merely a label of opinion to brand those whom someone dislikes. (This assumes, falsely I believe, that something radical is necessarily negative.) He/she then proceeds to remove articles with the justification that the lawyer in question is not a radical lawyer. If he/she believes that the classification is a matter of opinion, then he/she cannot make a ruling on whether or not someone is radical without inserting his/her perspective as the supposed objective truth. Furthermore, if this user is concerned with objectivity, then he/she should not have replaced "defend the rights of controversial client" in place of defend controversial clients" on the Lynne Stewart article. JillandJack's phraseology is obviously biased because it assumes that the methods of Stewart clearly advance the rights of someone. While that may be the case in someone's opinion, an objective statement would simply recognize that she represents controversial clients.
Thus, the actions of this user are hypocritical in addition to constituting acts of vandalism.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:GastonChevroletIndy1920.jpg
|
Thanks for uploading Image:GastonChevroletIndy1920.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Sanbec 10:07, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Karen Morley Image
Hi,
Would you assist me with placing an image of Karen Morley which I have uploaded to Wikipedia. I believe that it is a fair use magazine scan and it is the first image I have contributed. It is from a 1933 Movie Classic film magazine. I do a lot of editing, especially of the insertions concerning old film stars. Best, Sincerely, Robert--Robert 23:49, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:BrigitteFossey.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:BrigitteFossey.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
Replaceable fair use disputed
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok ☠ 01:09, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:WeldandPresley.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:WeldandPresley.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:34, 9 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 19:34, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
