As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Jharsuguda had a population of 75,570. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jharsuguda has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 60%. In Jharsuguda, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The cosmopolitan place is the economic hub of western Orissa. It is fast developing as an industrial hub. Currently the mineral based industries on steel and aluminium sector is crowding the city outskrits. The steel plants like SMC Power Generation Ltd., Bhushan Steel & Power Ltd., Action Ispat Ltd., Eastern Steel & Power Ltd., SPS Steel & Power Ltd. are successfully running the business. The mega project like Vedanta Alumina Ltd. has started the project.
