On January 16, 2007, Brand New sent out a press release stating that "Jesus Christ" from their 2006 album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me would be the "official" first single for the record.

- The song was performed by the band when they appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on January 19, 2007. The song was played without the 40-second intro from the album version, but featured the instrumental outro, which is cut from the radio edit.
- The song was featured in an episode of the television show, Friday Night Lights.
- The lyrics "And at the gate does Thomas ask to see my hands?" is a biblical allusion to Doubting Thomas, who asked to see Jesus' hands.
