Jesse Hubbard and Angie Baxter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jesse Hubbard and Angela "Angie" Baxter Hubbard were a popular couple on the soap opera All My Children. Jesse was played by Darnell Williams and Angie was played by Debbi Morgan. Angie Baxter and Jesse Hubbard were best friends to Greg Nelson and Jenny Gardner. They were also daytime's first African-American supercouple.
Jesse first appeared in Pine Valley in 1981 as the nephew of Dr. Frank Grant, who assumed custody after the death of his sister (Jesse's mother). Angie first appeared in 1982, as the daughter of a well-to-do Pine Valley couple. Shortly after Angie's first appearance on the show, they were paired with one another.

Angie was wealthy and Jesse, like Jenny, was from the wrong side of the tracks. Jesse and Angie quickly fell in love, though Angie's father, Les Baxter (portrayed by 70s icon Antonio Fargas) strongly disapproved, feeling that Jesse was not good enough for his daughter. After Jesse was falsely acussed of attempting to rape Angie's former friend Liza Colby, he fled to New York City with his best friend Jenny. Angie, believing that the rumor was true and that Jesse fled out of guilt, was heartbroken. When Liza finally confessed that she'd lied, Jesse returned to Pine Valley and resumed dating Angie.
[edit] 1984-1985
Jesse wanted to make love to Angie badly, but Angie refused until they were married. Angie and Jesse eloped, because Angie was afraid of her parents' reaction if she told them of their intended plans. Soon thereafter, Angie found out she was pregnant. Angie confided in her mother Pat that she and Jesse were married and that she was pregnant. Angie was so scared to tell Jesse; her insecurities grew when she thought Jesse was falling in love with another woman. Pat had a conversation with Jesse about the possibility that Angie could become pregnant. Jesse replied, "I couldn't even think of it for another few years."
When Angie learned of this, she divorced Jesse without telling him she was pregnant. Les encouraged Angie to give her baby, Frankie, away, and she started adoption proceedings. When Jesse begged her to take him back, Angie told him about the baby. Together they kidnapped their son, who had found a new home, and ran away to Sea City. After Angie and Jesse asked a judge to give custody of the baby back to them, they remarried.
In 1985, Jesse and Angie's relationship was threatened once again. Eugene Hubbard, Jesse's half-brother, arrived in Pine Valley and immediately set his sights on Angie. Also new in town was nightclub singer Yvonne Caldwell (portrayed by Vanessa Bell Calloway), who came to Pine Valley at Eugene's request. Her plan was to lure Jesse away from Angie so they would divorce and Angie would find solace with Eugene.
One night Yvonne called Jesse over. She seduced him and the two made love. Eugene made up a lie so Angie would arrive at Yvonne's house just in time to catch Jesse in bed with Yvonne. This led to a dramatic brawl between Angie and Yvonne. Angie was furious and moved in with her mother, but eventually forgave Jesse after finding about Eugene's plans. Later, a pregnant Yvonne lied and said the child she was carrying belonged to Jesse. After admitting that she had lied, Yvonne gave her baby away to a black market baby adoption ring.
[edit] 1986-1988
In 1986, Jesse was working to find out the identity of "Mr. Big," the leader of the black market baby adoption ring to whom Yvonne sold her baby. After many months, he found out Mr. Big was his own father-in-law, Les Baxter. Les confronted Jesse with a gun and Jesse pushed Les down a flight of stairs. Les was killed in the fall, which devastated Angie so much that she separated from Jesse yet again.
Soon Jesse joined the Pine Valley Police Department, and reconciled with Angie. However, he was eventually shot and killed in the line of duty, saving the life of wealthy businessman John Remington.
Remington (or "Remy" as he was often called) tried to start a romantic relationship with the recently-widowed Angie, but his attempts were unsuccessful. This was due in part to the fact that Angie was still grieving, but Remington's association with Jesse's death made an Angie-Remy relationship all but impossible. Eventually, Angie had three brief romances: the first with police officer Derek Frye (Jesse's former protégé), and the other two with medical colleagues Jeff Martin and Cliff Warner. Angie left Pine Valley in 1990, taking her son Frankie with her.
[edit] Angie & Jacob
For years, All My Children fans clamored for the reunion of Jesse and Angie. However, the nature of Jesse's death (an on-screen death in the hospital as the result of a gunshot wound) made this all but impossible, even by soap opera standards. Eventually, fans got the next best thing. In 1993, Debbi Morgan joined the cast of the soap opera Loving, reprising her role as Angie (who settled in Corinth, Pennsylvania). In 1995, Darnell Williams joined the cast as a mysterious stranger named Jacob Johnson. Jacob, whose actual surname was Foster, bore an uncanny resemblance to Angie's late husband Jesse. Originally, Angie resisted any type of relationship with Jacob. However, the two ultimately fell in love. They emerged as the core couple when Loving was relaunced as The City, eventually moving to New York City, marrying, and adopting a daughter.

- From 1990-1991, Angie was portrayed by Sandra Quarterman, who would later become a regular on the ABC sitcom Hangin' with Mr. Cooper.
- Darnell Williams and Kim Delaney shared a noticeable amount of chemistry in their respective roles as Jesse and Jenny. However, it is widely believed the producers of All My Children shied away from pairing them as a romantic couple, as a Black male/White female relationship was still considered be a taboo on daytime television in the early 1980s.
