Jesper Strömblad, born on November 28, 1972, is best known as the lead guitarist of the Swedish melodic death metal band In Flames. He is one of the band's founding members and is the only remaining original member. He is responsible for writing the main melodies of the majority of the In Flames songs, but leaves most of the solo duties to his companion Björn Gelotte, due to his lack of interest in them.[1]

Jesper started learning music at age 5, with the violin that he played until he turned 12, after which he first heard Iron Maiden and began learning how to play the electric guitar. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were Swedish folk musicians.

On October 23, 2006, Jesper decided to take a temporary break from touring with In Flames, due to undisclosed "issues to deal with" back home in Sweden. The band's close friend and former touring guitarist Niklas Engelin filled in onstage.

[edit] Projects besides In Flames

Jesper is known for having played with and been a founding member of a series of bands and side projects.

[edit] Current

Jesper is currently the bassist of Dimension Zero, a side project which he started with former In Flames guitarist, Glenn Ljungström. Jesper is also currently a member of another side project he started called All Ends, for which he and his In Flames bandmate Björn Gelotte both write the music for. Neither of them plan to play in the side project due to In Flames' demanding schedule, but they continue to aid in writing songs for the band to play.

[edit] Guest appearances

On the upcoming Annihilator album, Metal, Jesper plays a guest solo on the song "Haunted". This album will be released in April 2007.

[edit] Equipment

Strömblad currently uses ESP guitars, and his favourite is the ESP EX Series. He was endorsed by ESP until the recording of Reroute to Remain, where he switched to using Gibson guitars with his fellow bandmate Björn Gelotte. Björn is still using Gibson guitars, but Jesper has switched back to using ESP guitars. During his time with Gibson, Jesper only used the Gibson Flying V and Explorer Voodoo-models.

Both the guitarists of In Flames are known for using the Peavey 5150 amp, but have also started to use the 6505-series. The only differences between these two amps are cosmetic. Jesper also uses a Line 6 POD XT Pro for his clean sounds, just like Björn.

Jesper believes that one of the greatest guitars of all time is the Fender Stratocaster, but he has never been seen playing one onstage, because he prefers the Explorer type for metal. [2]

I don't have any Strat but I'm thinking of buying one, or maybe a Jazzmaster or a Mustang. (...) I have been persuaded by my bandmates that the ultimate metal guitar is the Explorer."
