[edit] "Slowest" Pole Sitter

Jerry Hoyt was 10th fastest qualifier in 1955 but started on the pole. That's the lowest on the speed chart using the "modern" qualifying rules. Here's a link:

Drivers from lower in the speed chart sat on the pole in the 'teens. But I'm pretty sure that starting positions were assigned by lot back then.
