Gerald L. Coffee (born 1935) in Modesto, California, is a former 2006 Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Hawaii. Coffee won the nomination, but suspended his campaign after heart surgery, and later formally withdrew.
Coffee served in Vietnam where he was a POW for 7 years, much of it in the "Hanoi Hilton". His military decorations include the Silver Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Star Medals, the Air Medal, two Purple Hearts, and the Vietnam Service Medal with 13 stars.
In August 2006 Coffee was rushed to Shannon Hospital in San Angelo, Texas, and underwent triple heart bypass surgery. As a result, Coffee suspended his senatorial campaign. He was released from the hospital in mid-August, and later decided to withdraw from the race.
On September 23, 2006, Coffee won the Republican nomination by default, but stated he would not run, the party chose Cynthia Thielen as a replacement candidate.[1]
Coffee lives in Aiea with his wife Susan. He is the father of four children, one of whom served in Iraq.
