Jerome Alvon Mathis (born July 26, 1983 in Petersburg, Virginia) is an American football wide receiver for the Houston Texans of the NFL. He was selected with the 13th pick of the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Hampton University. And a coincidence, Mathis wears number 13. In 2005 he was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl as the AFC's kick returner.

Mathis attended Petersburg High School in Petersburg, where he was an all-state, all-district and all-metro wide receiver and kick returner. He left high school as a six time state champion in track, winning the 2001 national indoor 200-meter title at the Nike Classic.

Mathis holds the NCAA record for career kick return average, breaking the record set by John Taylor of Delaware State University, with an average of 26.6 yards per return. He also holds the NCAA record for career kickoff returns for a touchdown with six. Mathis recorded the second fastest 40 time at the 2005 NFL Combine with a time of 4.28 seconds, just slower than Fabian Washington, who made it in 4.25 seconds.

In his rookie season with the Houston Texans he was their main kick returner. He was the only offensive player in the 2005 NFL Draft picked by the Texans. Jerome Mathis was selected to the Pro Bowl as he was one of three rookies (Mathis, Merriman, Tatupu) to be featured in the game.
