[edit] JHS Fire

An early morning fire at Jena High School has destroyed most of the main building causing classes at the school to be cancelled for Thursday, November 30, and possibly for Friday, December 1. All LaSalle Parish fire departments responded to the scene with the first call-out around 4a.m. The fire is believed to have started in the main office area and fireman expect the be fighting the blaze all day Thursday. The main problem is the double roof on the old building. Firemen are breaking holes in the pitched roof to reach the flat concrete-tar roof that is still burning. Most all classrooms in the main building are destroyed. The LaSalle Parish School Board is expected to enter into a special meeting soon to discuss what to do with students at Jena High School. Only the main building was affected, but it housed the majority of the classrooms of the school. Jena Town officials said all four of the town's water wells are pumping water for the firemen and can't keep up. There is no word on the cause of the fire and officials from the state fire marshal's office are expected to investigate.
