Jelling municipality

Jelling municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Vejle County on the Jutland peninsula in southeast Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 89 km², and has a total population of 5,697 (2005). Its mayor is Arne H. Sigtenbjerggaard, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Jelling.

Neighboring municipalities are Tørring-Uldum to the northeast, Give to the northwest, Egtved to the southwest, and Vejle to the southeast.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

Hvejsel Parish
Jelling Parish
Kollerup Parish
Vindelev Parish

By January 1, 2007 Jelling municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with Børkop, Egtved, Give, and Vejle municipalities to form a new Vejle municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,055 km² and a total population of 82,935 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").

Located in the municipality are the runic gravestones— the Jelling stones, the burial mounds, and church which became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.
