Interests
I'm a graduate (Class of 2005) of The Evergreen State College, having earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science for my studies focused in mathematics and the natural sciences. I am currently living in my hometown of Longview, Washington.
I'm a geek and/or nerd under many of the definitions stated in those articles. I use the Debian distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system, with KDE as my desktop environment of choice.
Additionally, I'm also interested in reading about philosophy (including such topics as stoicism, Taoism. rationalism, humanism, and atheism) and history.
Work on Wikipedia
Rather than focus on trying to compose the perfect article, I'm mostly focused on WikiGnomish maintenance work, such as fixing typos, bypassing disambiguating pages, fiddling with templates, wikifying articles, and other such cleanup tasks.
While I don't do much major editing, I consent to multi-license my contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License (as well as the GFDL) in case someone would find such licensed contributions useful.
Tools
A few things I've found useful to enhance my experience here:
- Navigation popups is an incredibly useful, JavaScript-based tool to preview linked article intros (without actually visiting the page directly), revert edits, fix links to disambiguation pages, and much, much more.
- Zocky's Picture Popups is a handy tool for looking at images in articles. It provides for enlarging and repositioning image previews, as well as showing the license of an image.
- Konqueror, my browser of choice, provides search-and-replace in edit boxes and highlights spelling errors.
Fair use images
I'm a big believer in upholding our Five Pillars, including the one about making our encyclopedia from free content. Fair use images, while arguably necessary in some cases, can be overused in more frivolous circumstances.
One of the most frivolous uses of fair use images is their use to decorate user pages and/or userboxes. This is why, aside from some substing in early 2006, my edits to userbox templates have been to bring them in compliance with our official policy on fair use criteria (abbreviated as 'WP:FUC' or 'WP:FU' in edit summaries). Non-free images are allowed for limited use under fair use guidelines in the encyclopedia (i.e., the actual articles of Wikipedia), as their usage can contribute to an article in situations where free alternative images aren't available. While fair use images serve an educational purpose in the encyclopedia proper, their usage on user pages (or templates, such as userboxes, intended for use on user pages) serves purposes of lesser importance. To minimize unnecessary usage of fair use images, their use on templates and user pages is explicitly prohibited by the policy on fair use criteria:
- Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages.
Images removed from userboxes can be replaced with images uploaded under a free license. This includes images tagged as public domain, or any of the images tagged using one of the free license tags. Additionally, there are many images available at the Wikimedia Commons, all of which are public domain or released under a free license.
