[edit] Plot

With President Bartlet back in the Oval Office, attention is turned to nominating a new vice president. The ideal choice is current Secretary of State, Lewis Berryhill. The new Speaker of the House, Jeff Haffley, has his own ideas. Gary Cole joins the cast as "Bingo Bob" Russell, a folksy Colorado representative who's on a short list (not the president's). Upstairs at the White House, meanwhile, the residence remains shaken in the wake of Zoey's traumatizing abduction. Says Abbey: "I blame Jed."

The title of the episode, "Jefferson Lives," is in reference to one of Bartlet's favorite stories in American History. The story, of course, is in reference to John Adams and Thomas Jefferson dying on the same day which just happened to be the United States semicentennial, July 4, 1826. John Adams final words were of his lifetime political rival Thomas Jefferson. Adams died moments after uttering the phrase, "Jefferson Lives", not knowing that Jefferson had actually passed hours before in Monticello, Virginia.
