Jeff Hewitt is an Australian stand-up comedian. Born in Melbourne and raised in Victoria, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, he is currently based in Perth, Western Australia where he regularly performs and MCs.

[edit] Competitions and Awards

Hewitt won the Raw Comedy WA State Final in March 2006, and went on to perform in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's Raw Comedy National Grand Final in April 2006. He was also a 2005 Raw Comedy WA State Finalist.

In November 2006 Hewitt won the People's Choice Award at the Golden Gavel National Competition, after winning the WA State Final in June 2006. The Golden Gavel is a national humorous public speaking competition for young lawyers which commenced in 2000.

[edit] Background

Hewitt performed his first stand-up gig in Perth in 1999, but stopped performing in 2000 after only 7 gigs. Hewitt's initial stage persona as an "angry young man" elicited wildly varying audience reactions, which shook the young Hewitt's confidence considerably. This, along with a waning passion for live performance, resulted in Hewitt taking a 4-year hiatus from the stand-up comedy world.

Hewitt returned to the Perth stand-up comedy scene in December 2004 and has been performing regularly ever since.

[edit] Style

Hewitt has made a conscious effort to steer away from the hard-edged, sometimes angry and confrontational nature of his early comedy and move towards a more playful and good-natured style of humour. His comedy is self-deprecating, low-energy, cheeky and occasionally acerbic.

On rare occasions Hewitt incorporates his acoustic guitar into his act but is very noncommittal and diffident about being any sort of musical comedian.

Hewitt has Filipino heritage on his maternal side and while he occasionally uses this to make biting comments about the Asian experience in Australia, he refuses to be labelled as an "ethnic comedian." However, in his earlier career, he did market himself as one half of "Perth's premier gay ethnic comedy duo." Today both he and collaborator Anthony Frosh claim this was simply marketing, and both men attest to having an "unblemished record of staunch heterosexuality."

Hewitt is a rising comedy star whose influences include, according to his comedy page at http://www.myspace.com/jeffhewittcomedy , Daniel Kitson, Rich Hall, David O'Doherty, Nick Sun, Demetri Martin and Woody Allen.
