Jeannette Island

Jeannette Island (Остров Жаннетты in Russian) is one of the islands of the De Long Islands archipelago in the East Siberian Sea, discovered in 1881 by the Jeannette expedition, commanded by Lieutenant Commander George W. DeLong, USN. Area: approx. 3,3 km². The highest peak of the island is 351 m. It is mainly formed with sandstone and covered with glaciers and firn. The island was claimed by the United States in 1881 and subsequently claimed by Russia. [1]
