Jean Piccard

Dr. Jean Felix Piccard (Basel, Switzerland, January 28, 1884 – January 28, 1963, Minneapolis, Minnesota) was a Swiss-born American scientist and high-altitude balloonist.
Several other members of the Piccard family including Jean's twin brother Auguste and Auguste's grandson Bertrand are known for ballooning.

- Gene Roddenberry most likely named Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation for one or both of the twin brothers Auguste Piccard and Jean Felix Piccard, and derived Jean-Luc Picard from their names.[1][2]
