Jean Daniel, né Jean Daniel Bensaid is an Algerian-born French Jew (1920-). French journalist. Founder and Executive editor of Le Nouvel Observateur. Author of La prison Juive (2003: Editions Odile Jacob). English edition published in the U.S.A. in 2005 by Melville House Publishing as The Jewish Prison: a Rebellious Meditation on the State of Judaism, translated by Charlotte Mandell.
Daniel is a Jewish humanist in the venerable tradition of the French Left. He argues in The Jewish Prison that by considering themselves God's Chosen People the Jews have imprisoned themselves. He rigorously questions the role of religion in modern morality.
