Jean Allefonsce

Jean Allefonsce (1482-c.1557) was a French explorer of North America. He was born in the Saintonge region of France in 1482.

He served as the chief pilot for Jean-François de la Roque de Roberval on his journey to America in 1542. He went on to search for the Northwest Passage along the St. Lawrence River and made maps which appeared in Cosmographie in 1545. He died on the reef of Rochelle, on the Bay of Biscay, circa 1557. He also wrote the book Voyages Avantureux, which was published posthumously in 1559.
