Jean-Louis Vignes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean-Louis Vignes was a French settler to the Los Angeles area that was one the first in California to import and plant European Vitis vinifera grapes. [1]. Arriving in 1831 from the Béguey, Cadillac district in Gironde, Vignes planted his vines in 1833 between Macy and Aliso Streets with the help of a former officer in Napoleon's army, Louis Bouchet. In 1834, Vignes planted one of the first orange groves in the Los Angeles areas. [2]
