[edit] Manitoba related pages

I noticed your changes to various Manitoba related pages. In particular I noticed that you were creating a lot of pages for towns that only contained the Manitoba template. On Wikipedia if you create an article you should at least provide an introductory sentence so that a person coming across the page at random would be able to discern the subject of the page. Qutezuce 05:23, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi again. I couldn't help but notice that you have been creating new pages that contain verbatim copies of pages that already exist on Wikipedia. There is no need to duplicate pages. I have changed them into redirects. Qutezuce 07:28, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello again. I noticed your change to CJZZ-FM. It seems you've gone to the other extreme by deleting content and changing it to a redirect. Please do not delete the contents of pages and redirect them if their content is not duplicated in the page you are redirecting to. If you need any help or have any questions please leave me a note on my talk page. Qutezuce 06:18, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

One further note about redirects. Redirects are there to help with navigation. Creating a redirect for pages like MenTV or Mystery (television station) doesn't help in that regard because the page you created the redirect to (CanWest Global Communications) doesn't contain any information about MenTV or Mystery (television station). If you wish to create an actual page for these stations with content about the stations that is great. Qutezuce 06:22, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
It appears there are pages in regards to these stations. I found them later from the CanWest pages. The redirects should probably go to those pages rather than the CanWest page. I ran out of time to correct the errors for that and regards to the jazz radio station. Thanks for following up on that. jdobbin

Hi again. You seem to be having some trouble with editing pages. For example, the edits that you made to the Winnipeg page. I'm not sure what you were intending with your series of edits, but at the end you tried to change it back to what it was before you editted it. What was your reason for editing the page? Qutezuce 00:47, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello. On Wikipedia there are usually seperate articles for electoral districts and the areas they represent. So for example St. Vital is about the electoral district, and for the part of Winnipeg I have created St. Vital, Manitoba. Please keep this distinction in mind in the future. Qutezuce 02:46, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello again. I saw that you created Nassau Street (disambiguation). When a page name has "(disambiguation)" in it's name, that means that the page should be a disambiguation page. I have moved that page to a proper title. Qutezuce 22:07, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi there. Your work is much improved, thanks for contributing your Manitoba related articles. One thing I noticed in the various towns/villages pages you are creating is that the first sentence doesn't provide enough context. Ideally the first sentence of a page should someone from any part of the world about the subject. So starting out by saying "Town x is a town in the RM of Y" doesn't help them because they will not known what the RM of Y is. Rather include Canada and Manitoba in the introductory sentence. And one tip I'd like to pass on to you is that you should check all the links on the pages you create to make sure they go to the pages you intend. For example Swan River goes to a disambiguation page, so instead use Swan River, Manitoba. Qutezuce 02:34, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

I apologize for undoing your deletion of Coldwell and Cartier. When you delete text from a page it is a very good idea to add a note to the edit summary explaining the reason for the deletion in order to avoid just such a situation. You also made a change to the list of communities page that I believe was accidental: you removed the text "[[fr:Liste des municipalités du Manitoba]]" from the bottom. This creates a link on the left hand side of the page to the same page on the French wikipedia. So if you see links like this on other pages please leave them alone. Qutezuce 02:58, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

As for differentiating towns from RMs I'm not sure what to do. I'd have to look around and see what other provinces/states have done and see if there is any Wikipedia policy on the matter. Qutezuce 03:17, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

On the page List of rural municipalities in Manitoba it looks like a convention has been established. If an RM has the same name as a town then the page the for RM should be located at "Roland, Manitoba (rural municipality)" for example. Qutezuce 20:40, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Regarding the Category:Manitobans. There is already a similar Category:People from Manitoba. Qutezuce 00:03, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Regarding categories in general. The policy is generally not to put articles (and categories) into both a category and a subcategory of that category. So for example if an article is already in the category Winnipeggers then it doesn't need to be in the category Manitobans because Winnipeggers is a subcategory of Manitobans. Qutezuce 02:10, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Regarding categories, when adding a category to a page you only need to add the sort key, which is the part after the |, when the title of the page is not the correct sort key. For example if the title starts with "the", or for people when you want them sorted by last name. Qutezuce 00:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pinawa

I have moved Pinawa to Pinawa, Manitoba. -- JamesTeterenko 05:52, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleting categories

Hello. Just so you know, you do not need to find an admin to delete (or move) a category. See the process in Wikipedia:Category deletion policy. Almost all the work can be done by any user, since it is to manually update all the articles in the category. Once the move is done, an admin can delete the category, but that is just the final step. -- JamesTeterenko 06:27, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimedia Canada

Hi there! I'd like to invite you to explore Wikimedia Canada, and create a list of people interested in forming a local chapter for our nation. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization, within our great nation. We'd also like to encourage everyone to suggest projects for our national chapter to participate in. Hope to see you there! -- user:zanimum

[edit] Manitoba stuff

Hi! I notice you have some interests in Manitoba. I have worked on a number of the old forts. (see Fort La Reine as an example. If you ever come across any good historical fort stuff that might help me, please think of this note. Thanks! (Stormbay 02:27, 27 March 2006 (UTC))

  • Thanks for the article. I actually know the site which they are discussing because I spent some time in that part of Manitoba many years ago. I will research some more. I live in a fairly remote location so I don't receive a "Press" every day. Thanks again! (Stormbay 17:00, 28 March 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Tallest buildings

Take a look at http://skyscraperpage.com/. You can search the tall buildings in Winnipeg by height there. Should help you with the list. Qutezuce 22:57, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

I've answered your comments on my talk page. --Scott Davis Talk 12:28, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Films shot in Winnipeg

Someone has duplicated the work you've done with List of TV and films shot in Winnipeg by creating List of movies filmed in Winnipeg. You may want to integrate the two pages into one. Qutezuce 05:25, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletes

I put a speedy delete tag on the Health Sciences Centre article, I think speedy deletes are applicable to this type of situation, but the admin that looks at it will decide.

Regarding the list of films/tv shot in Winnipeg, just merge in any extra information from List of films shot in Winnipeg into List of TV and films shot in Winnipeg and then List of films shot in Winnipeg can be changed into a redirect. Qutezuce 04:31, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the appreciation. I will take a short wikibreak, and when I return, I will definitely try to condens/re-structure the Manitoba article (if, that is, someone doesn't get to do it before that). - Qyd(talk)04:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Douglas

I agree with your comments and I'm happy with your current edit. The old one created an impression that his work was in a field already discredited. --JGGardiner 20:57, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winnipeg Photos

I have some photos I can still put up. If you want some specific things, I'm often in the downtown & surrounding area. I'll also be MTC, Fringe fest and folklorama plenty. Just leave me a message and I'll see what I can do. superman 05:21, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

I've added in: Folklorama, Red River Exhibition, Le Musee de Saint-Boniface Museum, Kildonan Park and Winnipeg Art Gallery photos onto their pages. I've also got:
sitting around.
superman 05:34, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I got a photo you could use for the Winnipeg section, it's the damage done by the flood at the Forks.
Bryan 04:37 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Here's a photo of the Winnipeg area I took in August 2006, see if you can find a good place for it.

[edit] Re: Walker Theatre request

Hi. Thanks for letting me know; I know what you mean by too many redlinks; I've got a backlog of a good thirty I've been meaning to get at on various pages; filling the blanks with more-or-less stubs in a lot of cases, but I know how much work it is even for a shortie. I'm going to try to recover my grandfather's music scores, which had clearly written on them "Walker Theatre", and I think there might have been a programme or two in the box which "got lost at the garage sale". The family house was 412 Toronto St, by the way, which I have a picture of somewhere (front) and also a series of pix of my Dad in the backyard boxing ring, c.1928, with some famous/unnamed boxer who was visiting.Skookum1 01:06, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Why did you revert the climate and geography section back to material that is contained in the sub article (which, incidentally, is my work as well)? The idea here is to shorten the Winnipeg article as it is too long. Better to delete the photo of the swimming pool. That is what I will do. if you want to put the photo back in, place it in the sub article. --207.161.43.149 23:31, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Airports in Manitoba

Not sure if you mean something like the List of airports in Pakistan. There are 136 airports in Category:Airports in Manitoba and I don't really think you could list them all right in the airticle. There are things like List of airports in the Edmonton area or List of airports in the Montreal area but I couldn't find List of airports in Alberta or List of airports in Quebec. I certainty think that it would be a good idea for each province to have one. There is also List of heliports in Canada. Just noticed that the Manitoba article links to the Winnipeg airport but the Alberta article does not link to Calgary or Alberta airports. LEt me know. 00:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

It shouldn't take too long to create one for each province. I would suggest that as there is already a category that sorts by alphabetical order and list by ICAO it ould be best to sort it by town. Looking at the Pakistan one, I would drop the colour, IFR and customs columns. Any other info that you think would be good. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 01:22, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Finally got most of them done. It took longer than I thought because I was missing a lot of the data and had to copy it back out (still have to finish Quebec & Ontario). The complete list is at Category:Lists of airports in Canada. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 12:40, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. This time I'll make sure I keep the data. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 00:15, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winnipeg article

Hi there. I don't have too much of an opinion on whether Winnipeg is ready for peer review or not. I am not too involved in the peer review process, and the Winnipeg article is no longer on my watchlist. -- JamesTeterenko 04:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

It's been a while since I have worked on a featured article, so I am a bit out of touch with the process. If I get a chance, I'll read through the article to see what could be improved. However, I don't have too much free time right now. -- JamesTeterenko 04:45, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Peer review

All steps are detailed at Wikipedia:Peer review#Nomination procedure. You could then request comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Canada and on WP:CANTALK, eventually also on related wikiprojects. After it goes through WP:PR, you could submitt it to Good Article review or even Featured Article review (even if the article fails, you would get good suggestions). Success. --Qyd 19:34, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I've added the {{peerreview}} tag on the talk page and created the subpage Wikipedia:Peer review/Winnipeg. It would be great if you co-signed the request, better still replace my signature there. (I can't follow up content related issues, as I'm not that familiar with the subject). I can post notices on WT:CANADA and WP:CWNB#Requests for peer review if you wish. --Qyd 01:08, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kitchen Craft of Canada Ltd.

A tag has been placed on Kitchen Craft of Canada Ltd., requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Calton | Talk 00:47, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not prepared to restore the article to actual article space until it has been expanded, since it might just get speedied again, but I've restored it to a subpage of your userspace so that you can work on it at your own leisure. It's at User:Jdobbin/Kitchen Craft of Canada Ltd. When it's ready to move back into articlespace, you can use the move tab at the top of the page to move it back to Kitchen Craft of Canada Ltd., or if you have problems with that, let me know and I can look after it. As for getting Winnipeg up to FA status, I'll try to help if I can, but I'm not hugely familiar with the city as a whole...just certain aspects of it. Bearcat 02:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Generally the best way to keep a new article from getting speedied is to include a statement right up front as to why it's notable, such as saying that they're one of the largest employers in the Winnipeg area and/or that their products are sold across Canada and internationally (which isn't that hard to confirm, since I know for a fact that I live within driving distance of at least 30 Kitchen Craft dealers). Sometimes valid article topics have gotten speedied on here because the article wasn't clear enough in the first place on why the topic was actually notable, so the best thing to do, if you only have time to write up a quick stub and come back to expand it later, is to make sure that at least one sentence in your stub explains why the topic is significant. Bearcat 02:20, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Winnipeg

Sorry we lost the internet connection for a few hours. I see that Bearcat has fixed the Kitchen Craft for you. As for getting more people involved you might try a note at Wikipedia:Canadian wikipedians' notice board/discussion. I'm go through the article tomorrow properly and comment on it then. Cheers. [edit] Linden Christian School

A tag has been placed on Linden Christian School, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. [edit] Multiple ref

Sorry for the delay in answering. If you need multiple instances of the same reference, you would use the following syntax at the first occurence:

<ref name=Statcan1>ref body</ref>

For the following occurences, you would use

<ref name=Statcan1/>

I wish I could but. I don't really understand what you're asking of me. ^^; You want me to use the same reference for two sentences on the article? *is a Wiki-newb* Disinclination 18:42, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
