Please do not the IP address of 216.11.106.4 (this I.P. address is liked to a school district and not just one computer). Please don't block because I have tried to add to a article but there was a temp ban on this IP which means all of our school district (Oxford Area Community Schools in Oxford, Michigan http://www.oxford.k12.mi.us) is blocked and I didn't even do anything
[edit] Africa award
I feel really silly about this, but I only noticed the award now, nearly three weeks after you gave it to me. So I would like to both apologise for being so unobservant, and of course I want to thank you, as I really appreciate it. I must say, I was disappointed when your Upholders of the Wiki award was turned down, but you've certainly done an excellent job in replacing it, and the award now looks absolutely fantastic. Thanks again, and Happy New Year! — Impi 09:27, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] two songs three articles
I think when you reverted a move of Human Nature (song) to Human Nature (Michael Jackson song), it left the article in both places. Now there is an article for Human Nature (Madonna song). I'm not familiar with any of them, but I was sorting through song stubs and didn't know what to do and which song take precedence. I was wondering if you would take a look, and make one possibly a redirect or disambig. Thanks. Smmurphy(Talk) 22:40, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Africa Award - Thanks
Hi JCW,
Firstly, a (belated) Happy New Year to you!
Secondly, I would also like to apologize for this belated thanks for the Africa Award that you gave me, but I have an even better excuse than Impi ... I was off getting married.
Kindest Regards, Elf-friend 13:28, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help on image copyright and African issues
Thanks again for tidying up the data on the two Botswana military sites. I noticed you have an offer to help new users open. I've only been posting for a couple of weeks. There are various things I'm unsure about; obviously I've tried looking through the wiki policies but am not really any clearer.
- Image copyright; what about grey area images like the pic I uploaded to illustrate the badly-needed stub on the Makgadikgadi Pans? It was downloaded from the Botswana Govt website, which has no copyright info of any kind on it. Emails to the two addresses provided on the site bounced. I assumed that in the real world they could not possibly mind the use of this tiny image. Was I wrong? More importantly, is this good practice on Wikipedia?
- I remember from the time I spent in Botswana, SA and Zim that (more or less) standard UK spellings are used. Does it follow from this that articles on Southern African issues should always be written in this spelling? I corrected the former redlink entry Botswana Defense Force to the proper spelling when I made the link, and that's obviously OK. But what about in the text of articles?
- Racial/racialist terms; I remember being very impressed when I saw the way wiki dealt with nigger and kike. Is it ok to have a Bantu entry which reads almost like a 19th century race-based view of the world? There are other examples, and on the one hand I don't want to be too prissy or PC about it, but on the other I know that Wiki aims to fight sytemic bias, and Africa is certainly under-represented in both quantity and quality of articles.
There are other areas I could do with guidance in, but I'm sure that is more than enough.
Finally, is there anything I can do to help you in return?Guinnog 18:38, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I'll try to re-source the image that is dodgy; I'm sure I know folk who were there and took good photos.
You didn't answer my last question though!Guinnog 22:55, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
No, sorry, I meant is there anything I can do to help you? Guinnog 07:19, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] An Esperanzial note
As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.
In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)
Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A request
Hi there. Recently a user called OrangeMan has brought about the following change in the opening paragraph of the Nelson Mandela page: whereas the previous version stated that NM was the first democratically-elected SA president, the change he supports says that NM was the first SA president elected in 'fully representative' elections. Okay, doesn't sound like a big deal, but his reasons for it have sparked a real dogfight on the Nelson Mandela talk page. You see, he claims that apartheid-era South Africa qualifies as a democracy because there was some semblance of elections. My view is that referring to apartheid-era SA as democratic in any way is offensive - he says this is POV, and that his take is NPOV. I am still convinced that the majority of South Africans, and of reasonable observers the world over, would agree with me. However, my real question is: must we tolerate such a viewpoint in the interests of a NPOV? Who decides what is POV and what is NPOV? He has claims the NPOV for himself - I and user:Ezeu deny this. What is your view? Would sincerely appreciate some feedback. Swissjames 21:03, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Another Esperanzial note...
Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Hey, thanks for reverting the Okapi page, I always feel bad when I start to near the third reversion of an article in a short period of time :-)
I was wondering, When people revert a page and get this fancy "reverted edits by <user|talk> to last revision by <user|talk>" is there a special mechanism to do this or is it just a manual copy/paste job? :-)

[edit] Howzit from SA Newbie
Just joined Wikipedia - addictive site! Have added a stub around Cape Argus Cycle Race, being the largest time cycle event in the world. Have also done some work on Midmar Mile, Comrades Marathon and Ironman SA. Will also add 94.7 in time. All need quite a bit of help if you've got some time and are interested.
Also question, under Johannesburg, there are thousands of Suburbs listed as well as every single road subsidiary - is that really necessary? Can't ever imagine them having any detail of any worth at such level of detail...maybe the bigger areas alone like Sandton, Bryanston etc. or major roads like N3? Apologies for the confusion. However, I will make some points in my defence. User Da:Legend tagged this as a speedy candidate as a copyright infringement. After checking, I noticed that the article was several months old and so was ineligible for speedy deletion. There was nothing on the article flagged by Da Lagend that indicated it was a copy of Wikipedia. Appropriately, I flagged it as a copyvio so that it could be sorted out as it has been. Please remember Wikipedia:Civility when leaving messages on talk pages as your response to me on the talk page for the article was uncivil in my view. Capitalistroadster 16:30, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

- Okay so how do I propose the Africa Award to be placed on the other award page as there is nothing on the page or discussion page? The award was selected by the Wikipedia:Africa-related regional notice board as Africa's award so it can not go in Personal user awards --Jcw69 18:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Africa award
Hello Jcw69. Sorry to bother you, but I have a question. I'm beginnign to feel a little left out ... you refer to me not being South African - despite having lived there for nine years as a kid - and then leave notes on many users talk page about a new African award, yet not mine, again. Should I feel slighted? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 00:06, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bush Telegraph
Hi Jcw,
Thanks for your kind note, I was feeling a bit despondent, as I certainly don't want to breach wiki-etiquette or harm Dewet's admin vote.
I really don't see any harm in informing people with the same interests of events affecting them per se, although I can appreciate that not everybody wants unsolicited messages on their talk pages.
But I probably did overstep the mark by asking some oppose voters to reconsider on their talk pages. This was not a mass spamming though - I approached four users whose concerns (I thought) had been properly addressed by Dewet's answers. One user (who had previously voted support but changed to neutral) changed his vote back to support, while I deleted the message from the other three's talk pages immediately after receiving the objection.
I am certainly willing to do my share in any mailing list, maybe we can borrow some technology from the Wikipedia signpost. I think "The South African Bush Telegraph" is an excellent name for it, by the way.
Kind Regards, Elf-friend 09:45, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Dunno if this is the right place to add it, but thanks for the heads-up on the Africa Award. I've added my vote, hope it succeeds. — Impi 21:24, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Just a small note to relay my sincere gratitude in operating the telegraph during my RfA; the support from fellow (South) Africans was a great help. dewet|✉ 07:37, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm ... just a thought regarding the Bush Telegraph ... we should probably use Wikipedia:Wikipedians/South Africa and/or the SA wikipedians category as our mailing list, but (to protect us from spamming accusations) ask that they notify us or mark their name in some way if they do not want to receive the "newsletter"? Elf-friend 08:25, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- I like the idea of doing it like the signpost or the esperanza newsletter. We could easily create a page somewhere that can be subst'ed onto the talk pages of those who signed up to the spamlist. Where would we start though? Wikipedia:Wikipedians/South Africa/Bush Telegraph seems a bit unwieldy? Would there be a problem with a once-off "spamming" of those on the list/category to simply notify them of the existence of a spamlist? dewet|✉ 08:33, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- What about making it a subpage of Wikipedia:WikiProject South_Africa? No, I don't see how anybody could possibly object to a once-off "spamming" of the people we believe would be interested, as we would not be advocating something, only notifying. Regards, Elf-friend 09:43, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Okay, lets use WikiProject South_Africa and the participants listed there as the users interested. We could make a heading in it and call it say The Bush Telegragh. We could then just send participants a reminder that a new post has been made if they don't have it on their watch list --Jcw69 10:14, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- OK, but there are only a handful people on there (five or so). I suggest approaching everybody on the South Africans list and in the South Africans category with the initial notification of its existence. Regards, Elf-friend 10:59, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
